    1. [WOODS-L] Index to VT newspapers online
    2. For over a year I have been working on posting an index of names for the marriage and death notices printed in the Vermont Chronicle, an old newspaper that was published between 1826 and 1896. The notices cover towns state wide, and also cover other places, including, but not limited to: Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Canadian Provinces and beyond. The death notices are not full obituaries as we know them today, but sometimes contain other useful information besides the location, name and age of the person. The marriage notices usually just note the bride and groom, but sometimes names of parents. Currently I have the Indexes for 1826-1850 online, with more added as time permits. You can find the indexes at: http://www.middlebury.edu/~swilson/introvc.html Thanks for your interest, hope it can help you in your searches. Sylvia Wilson

    2. I was wondering if anyone had a Robert Woods of 1823 Henry County Georgia, and the same Robert Woods of 1830's-1840's Troup County Georgia in their files? He was quite possibly the father of Samuel and Sussanah Woods of Newton County Georgia during the early 1830's. Does anyone have a Robert Woods in their files b abt 1784 that they cant seem to trace? Has anyone researched the children of William and Sussanah Woods of Abbeville S.Carolina? I really need a break on this.4 years of aggressive pursuit and still only circumstantial evidence. Thanks for any help! Russell E Woods

    3. Hello Dave, Per your request and many others who have asked. To subscribe to the WOOD-ENGLAND List, just send an e-mail to <WOOD-ENG-L-request@rootsweb.com> with ONLY the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) in the Subject line and the same word "subscribe" (without the quotes) ONLY in the body of the e-mail. For Digest Mode, instead of the "L" in the e-mail address put a "D" (i.e., <WOOD-ENG-D-request@rootsweb.com>. Hope this helps. Good Luck! 3. Hello Collin, Are you aware that there is a WOOD List for UK? I'm forwarding a copy of your posting to this list. I hope that's O.K. I have been researching a large WOOD family in the UK (See below) that began in Devon 1578 and extends into other locations. There are 14 generations. Please contact me if you would like more information. Good luck! Specifically the Counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire. All the postings seem to be for the US of A. regards Colin Wood ---------------------------------------------------------------------- William WOOD/WOOD Family - UK (1578-present) I have been trying to trace this WOOD family line that begins with William WOOD b. ca 1578 in Tiverton, Devon, ENG. I have compiled a large database of 14 generations that extends to the present. Based on Family hearsay, I believe my main WOOD line in the USA is related to this WOOD line although I have not yet been able to identify the immigrant ancestor and make the final direct connection. It is believed my g-grandfather, Rev./Dr. Jesse Lee(Leonidas?) WOOD b. 1839 in MS, USA and d. 18 Oct 1896 in Ardmore, I.T.(OK), USA is related to this WOOD Line and that his father (name unkn.) probably emigrated to the USA 1750-1800 and was possibly a descendant of the William WOOD b. 22 Sep 1738 in Tiverton, Devon, ENG. William WOOD of Tiverton, Devon, ENG. (b. ca. 1578, d. ca. 1611) was a serge manufacturer. Several descendants were very successful and became quite well known. Among them was Sir Matthew WOOD b. 1768, d. 1843. Sir Matthew WOOD had three sons: Rev/Sir John Page WOOD who was the father of Field Marshall Sir Henry Evelyn WOOD, Sir William Page WOOD (Lord Chancellor of London-1868, a.k.a. Baron Hatherley) and Western WOOD. Sir Matthew WOOD served as Sheriff of London (1815), Lord Mayor of London (1816) and was elected a member of Parliament each year from 1817 until his death in 1843. Robert Wright WOOD's eldest son was Dr. William Burton Persse WOOD who was the father of Sir Henry "Harry" Trueman WOOD and Annie WOOD BESANT. Katharine (Katie or Kitty) O'SHEA nee WOOD, later the wife of Charles Stewart PARNELL, was a daughter of Sir John Page WOOD and sister of Sir Evelyn WOOD.

    1. [WOODS-L] STILTNER, CARTER, OR WARNER? I know she married a ARTHUR at least.
    2. Danny & Faith Blount
    3. O.K. I confess I am totally confused!!!! Can anyone help me figure out this mess????? Pricy STILTNER or CARTER or WARNER Arthur. 1. Pricy was married to Lee Anderson Arthur. I have no marriage date. 2. Pricy was b. 07Aug1869 Off of death records. 3. Pricy died of T.B. on 25Feb1923 according to the death records I have from the Webster Co. Court House in West Virginia. 4. On the death records it states that Jackson M. STILTNER is Father and Martha WOODS is the mother. 5. According to census records, it is possible that Elisha CARTER & Nancy STILTNER are Jackson M. STILTNER's parents. Which would make sense because it looks like they were never married. 6. Now........I have several Obits from the family. Pricy's husband Lee's states he was preceded in death by his wife Mrs. Patricia Arthur. Which throws another name kink in with the first name. Then this is what her children's Obits. state: (1)Blanche Mae ARTHUR Cochran - the daughter of Lee A. and Priscilla CARTER Arthur. (2)Opal Leone ARTHUR Goff - she was the daughter of the late Lee and Priscilla WARNER Arthur. (3)Herbert Hobson ARTHUR - Doesn't state. (4)Essie Gay ARTHUR Ware - Doesn't state. Now, I have land records from the Webster Co. Court House in Webster Springs, WV. that state there was land given to Lee & Pricy Arthur for $1 to take care of an Adam & Mary M. Warner, which I was just informed by someone that Mary M. used to be an ARTHUR. (I still have to figure this connection out - to see how Lee is related.) Can someone help me figure this mess out? Thanks, Faith blount@netnet.net

    3. Why did they have to make this so confusing for our generation? Well here is what I have. Pricy CARTER OR STILTNER Arthur b. 07Aug1869 d. 25Feb1923 of T.B. On the court house death records it states that Pricy's parents were Jackson M. Stiltner and Martha Woods. If I have done my research correctly(Which I am always still verifying) Nancy STILTNER and Elisha CARTER were Jackson's parents. They were never married. Soooooooo, The Stiltner and Carter names were both used. So my question is......Instead of searching for the Stiltner name for awhile I am going to concentrate on the Carter name and see if anyone can fill in any of my blanks; any info on Pricy or Priscilla Carter? Any suggestions appreciated. 1. Still searching for birth and marriage records for Pricy. 2. And some of her children's births. 3. How does Frances COE fit into the picture for being Pricy's sister or half sister maybe? 4. Martha WOODS, need any info regarding her. (Pricy's mother) 5. 3. In my browsing around for Perry County Info. I found this on a search engine. Not my line but thought it might help someone else. It came from the 1850 Federal census. I think we spell Houdeshell - Howdyshell in this area. This might give a clue as to how the census takers spelled phonetically and did not ask the resident how they spelled their names. I may be wrong but have never seen it spelled like this. Sherole Perry * Township: MONDAY CREEK House#: 172 HOUDESHELL CATHERINE 2 F USA OH ? HOUDESHELL JEROME 2 M USA OH ? 3. Thank you Emily for your information. If I could find the death records of my Grandparents Effie Woods Griffin b 1866 in Hocking County, Ohio d abt 1945 Hocking County or Meigs County, Ohio or my Grandfather b 1856 in Perry County, Ohio d 1940 in Hocking County, Ohio I'm sure there would be a break through. My Grandmother's Father's name was Ephraim Woods born and died in Hocking County, Ohio. I found his name on her marriage license because my Grandmother was 13 when she married. I also found him on a 1910 census in Baltimore, Fairfield County, Ohio. There is a strange family name that has been used a s a given name to a dead sister of mine that died a month after birth and a female cousin of mine on the Woods side. It is Almont. Does that sound familiar to you with your line? Thank you. Sherole
