But, I disagree with you about the name of Lydia's spouse. His name is William Spencer Cummings, not William Wellington Cummings. I know this because he is listed on the 1855 NY Census as William S. Cummings, on his gravestone in Oak Grove Cemetery as adjacent to Lydia as William S Cummings, on the 1865 NY Census as William S Cummings, his son Judson's death certificate lists William S. Cummings as his father, and there are other documents that name him as William S.. For the life of me I cannot find, at the moment, the clue that proved his middle name as Spencer. There are two William Wellington Cummings that I have identified, one is the child of Lydia Woodmansee and William S. Cummings and the other the brother of William S. Cummings. I think that the reason Varnum is listed on two different 1840 US Censuses is that he was in the process of moving his family from Tully to New Albion. ANd he happened to have been enumerated twice because the census was taken over a period of months. Or, he lived in two places at the time and had two homes. The 1840 Tully Census shows one male and one female 40-49 years old, The 1840 Census of New Albion shows one male 40-49, and one female 30-39. The discrepency was just a mistake of making a mark in the wrong column. It is interesting that the number of people in the family in 1840 in Tully was 7 and in New Albion it was 11. Maybe a few of the kids had moved ahead to New Albion with Varnum's brother Joseph who is also listed on the 1840 US Censuses of Tully and New Albion. and, 1850 as well, apparently.
