The Woodmansee Genealogy shows William Henry Woodmansee, b. 1843, d.1914. He was apparently (twice) a deserter, once in Michigan and once in KY. He married 15 year old Zelma Naylor 9 days after his KY desertion. He later (1874) m. Nancy Fields and had 10 kids. The Genealogy only has the children of one child listed. Harvey Berkley Wdse had 8 children of his own. It would seem odd that older children might change their name as well as the father (Perry was b. in 1881 and was probably in his 20s when the name was changed). Was it actually Perry who changed his name? The 1910 Census shows a William Johnson with wife Nancy (14 when married) and children John, Joseph, Minnie and Harvey. It fits. Perry Johnson and wife, Lola, were also living in Dieterich, KY in the 1910 Census. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Gideon Woodmansee married Amy Carter and they had a son Thomas (b.1793/Dartmouth, MA). Thomas Woodmansee married Cynthia Chadwick and they had a son George Thomas (b. 1840/ Kalamzoo, MI). George Thomas Woodmansee married Annie Dent and had a son Charles Ewing (b. 1891/Bee, TX). Charles Ewing Woodmansee married Merle Howell and had my father Charles Howell Woodmansee who died in Eugene Oregon in 2008. My father had no siblings and no sons. My sister and I do not go by the Woodmansee name. Even if we did, our children took their fathers' name. The Woodmansee name on this limb of the majestic Woodmansee tree died with ! my father. Prior to Thomas, Jr. and Mary Chase, I was able to trace a direct line back to Gabriel Woodmansee and his wife,Sarah Ricks. Gabriel Woodmansee was born in 1633. It boggles my mind. The 10 generations of family history that I have learned is older than this country by over 100 years. I have learned of Quakers, seafarers, revolutionary war soldiers, civil war veterans, homesteaders, and farmers. I have learned of women who toiled tirelessly in the shadows while raising as many as 14 children. I have learned of preacher's daughters who basked in the freedom of the dawning of the 20th century and rejected their upbringing with a flask in their pocket and a twinkle in their eye. I have learned of preacher's daughters who became preacher's wives and then preacher's widows, supporting themselves on a meager civil war widow's pension and living with quiet dignity in abject poverty. This story goes on and on. What an epic tale. What an amazing cast of characters. It ! is a story that is an inspiration to all of us who have given up or ha ve lost hope in the face of overwhelming odds. But, I disagree with you about the name of Lydia's spouse. His name is William Spencer Cummings, not William Wellington Cummings. I know this because he is listed on the 1855 NY Census as William S. Cummings, on his gravestone in Oak Grove Cemetery as adjacent to Lydia as William S Cummings, on the 1865 NY Census as William S Cummings, his son Judson's death certificate lists William S. Cummings as his father, and there are other documents that name him as William S.. For the life of me I cannot find, at the moment, the clue that proved his middle name as Spencer. There are two William Wellington Cummings that I have identified, one is the child of Lydia Woodmansee and William S. Cummings and the other the brother of William S. Cummings. I think that the reason Varnum is listed on two different 1840 US Censuses is that he was in the process of moving his family from Tully to New Albion. ANd he happened to have been enumerated twice because the census was taken over a period of months. Or, he lived in two places at the time and had two homes. The 1840 Tully Census shows one male and one female 40-49 years old, The 1840 Census of New Albion shows one male 40-49, and one female 30-39. The discrepency was just a mistake of making a mark in the wrong column. It is interesting that the number of people in the family in 1840 in Tully was 7 and in New Albion it was 11. Maybe a few of the kids had moved ahead to New Albion with Varnum's brother Joseph who is also listed on the 1840 US Censuses of Tully and New Albion. and, 1850 as well, apparently. I think that Miles married Phianna when he was 22 (17 Mar/24 Apr 1844) and they had 5 children and were married for 45 years. When did he have time for a second wife? I'd want confirmation/sources of that story. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
