Surnames: Woodall Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/mbexec/msg/5538/YFXBAEB/723.1.1 Message Board Post: Dave, So nice to hear from you! My great-grandfather was named Joseph N. Woodall and was born in 1864. I believe he was born in Newcastle-under-lyme, but I"m not sure about that. I found an 1871 UK census entry with a Joseph Woodall who was 7 years old at the time, and his father's name was William, who was a limestone miner, and mother Sofia. There were brothers named William and I think a Daniel. There was a sister named Emma as well. One of my Grandpa Woodalls sisters (Joe Woodalls daughter) was named Emma Sofia, so it's circumstantial but there is a link. Iron or steel working seems to be a common theme, as well. How much do you know about your ancestors from the 1860-1890 period? I believe my great-grandfather came to America around 1887 or so. Common family names are William and Joseph- there has been one of each in all 6 generations that I am aware of. Also, have you done any DNA tests? I met a Nigel Woodall through familytreedna.com. We matched 12 genes o! n the Y chromosome, so we are realted somehow but he can trace his Woodalls to the 1770's in London. I hope to hear form you soon.
