    3. I'm really glad to see people responding and hope we can all help each other. My Woolverton line is with William Woolverton, b. 16 Feb 1775 in NJ, d. 1837, Greencastle, Putnam Co., Indiana. William married Susannah Hall 02 Oct 1802. They had twelve known children, the 7th being William, b. 11, Mar 1817 in PA, died 15 Apr 1879 in Prairie Grove, Washington Co., AR. This William married Hannah E. Myers 20 Jan 1839 in Greencastle, IN (I have a copy of the marriage license/certificate). William and Hannah had nine known children, the youngest being Joseph Campbell Woolverton, b. 13 Feb. 1861 in Cass Co., TX. After the Civil War, the family moved to Washington Co., Arkansas. They were on their way to Missouri, and while in Arkansas, decided to use the money they had to buy land. According to family history, all the children were born in Texas except for the two oldest, who were born in Indiana. Joseph Campbell Woolverton was my great-grandfather. He married Amanda Saloma Darrow in Arkansas. I really would like to have proof of the parents of William Woolverton, married to Susannah Hall. Anyone have information to help? There are theories, but no proof. Onoldah L. Rone oronem@juno.com or RONE@flash.net

    2. Glenn Gohr
    3. Jacque Knapp mentioned a Capt. Charles Woolverton mentioned as Governor of Barbados as listed in the COMPLETE BOOK OF IMMIGRANTS, 1607-1660. I had also recently seen this at the local library here in Springfield, MO. It is interesting to see another early Charles Woolverton. However, as the book lists items from 1607-1660, and our Charles Woolverton was born ca. 1660, this is too early to be the same man. I had planned to mention this in WOLVERTONS UNLIMITED. He could POSSIBLY be the father, uncle, grandfather, or other relative of our Charles, but no relation is known as yet. There are other Wolvertons (various spellings) in Barbadoes in 1600s: I've seen reference to a John Wolverston, his wife Anne, son Benjamin, when John died in May 1663; also a Jane Woolvertson, Elizabeth Woolverston, John Woolvertston, Benjamin Woolverston mentioned in will of Robert Custus in 1687; Benjamin Woolverstone, mentioned as decd. in 1682. These are all mentioned in BARBADOS RECORDS, Vol. I (1639-1680) by Sanders. (See Royal Wolverton's COUSINS UNLIMITED newsletter, Oct. 1983, p. 5.) Also, in COUSINS UNLIMITED, Jan./Feb. 1992, p. 7, as taken from HISTORY OF BARBADOES, 1625 to 1685 by Vincent Harlow is further mention of Capt. Charles Wolverston coming to Barbados in 1625 soon after it was first settled by the English. In June 1628 Capt. Wolverston (this could be the same Charles Wolverston) was made governor for 3 years. I believe there was also a Peter Wolverton/Wolverston at Barbados in the early years. Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org

My local library obtained Complete Book of Emigrants 1607-1660 for me and on pp. 86 and 466 Capt. Charles WOOLVERTON is mentioned as governor of Barbados. Does anyone know anything about this? Is this the same CW who was born1660 in Eng. and who died abt 1746 in Hunterdon Co NJ? 2. Does anyone have info re: ancestors of the husband of Susan WOOLVERTON (b. 1847, Romney WV), daughter of Susan PASCAL (1804-1892) and Joel, Jr. WOOLVERTON (1805-1892)? I was kind of hoping to hear more about folks' lineage, especially since mine is so different from everybody else's. I am trying to build a master tree for the whole Woolverton/Wolverton family since Charles I, and have obtained a lot of really good information from people online. I would hate to see this exercise die out from lack of input. One question I do have, possibly to Glenn, but also open to everybody else, is this: what is the plausibility of setting up a gedcom exchange? Does rootsweb have a facility for this, or does anybody else have access to a fair bit of ftp space? I am hoping that this could be done to let us swap around even more information. 3. To answer Diane Jacob's question about accessing the records of the list. All prior messages on Rootsweb (from the last week of May until now) should be available through the Rootsweb Archives. I haven't tried this, but here is what I know: If interested in a certain word (Charles, Wolverton, Woolverton, Chadwick, etc.), then request any messages using that particular word, like this: Send a message to: WOLVERTON-L-request@rootsweb.com For the subject line, put: archive In the body of the message, type: search Charles latest/* This would send you all postings using the word "Charles" that appeared on the Wolverton list. You might also try these: search Wolverton latest/* search Woolverton latest/* This will only give you the exact lines where the words appear. To order a complete message, there is a further procedure which I'm not clear on. For more information, look up this URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/members/archives.html Maybe this will help. 3. Diane, Glad to hear from you. Yes, the Wolverton Discussion list is still operating. It is run by ROOTSWEB now, since MAISER was no longer able to carry on all the family surname lists. Since the change over to the Rootsweb system, however, there has been very little traffic on the list. I am sending this same message to everyone on the list so that hopefully someone will send in a query or say something. I have been checking the list of subscribers periodically. The last time I checked was on July 4th. Rootsweb had you (Snowman6@aol.com) listed as one of the subscribers at that time. As of July 4, 1997, there were 35 people signed on to the Wolverton e-mail discussion list. Everyone who was signed on to the MAISER list was automatically transferred over to the Rootsweb discussion list. (MAISER and ROOTSWEB did all the legwork on that.) The proper address to send a message to the list is: WOLVERTON-L@rootsweb.com Earlier I sent a message to the list and assumed that everyone received it. It was a welcome message with all the rules for using the list--how to subscribe and unsubscribe, how to post queries, etc. If anyone needs me to send them another copy of the welcome message, I'd be glad to do it. I hope someone will post to the list soon. 3. To Carole Hare, Your line of Woolvertons sure sounds like the same line of Woolvertons to me also. My records disagree in only two places with your thumb nail sketch. I have Daniel 1 being born 6 Mar 1704 in NJ and your John Woolverton being born in 1887 in NJ. I do not have any descendants for your John Woolverton until now - your Rosanna. In addition to the copy of Miss Runk's Book that you requested from Glenn Gohr might I suggest that you subscribe to the Wolvertons Unlimited letter. It is published 6 times a year by Glenn for $8 a year. It is very well done and I am certain you would find it interesting. It is now being mailed to over 150 Woolverton/ Wolverton researchers. 3. Here is a recent query I received, so I'm posting it to the list. We need more queries! I've been on vacation for 2 weeks and currently have company at my house. Summer is a busy time, but keep in touch if you can. The address to post queries to the list is: WOLVERTON-L@rootsweb.com I am currently working to change the discussion list so that any replies will automatically reply to the list. (This is how it was set up with MAISER originally.) Personal replies can still be sent to an individual's personal e-mail address, but if simply hitting the reply button, the response would go to everyone on this list. I hope this will help. 3. I have a webpage with Geocities. Sometimes you can not get logged on to these pages because of high volume of traffic. If you have never been able to get connected check your address. I have read with some geocities documentation that the address IS case sensitive. For example: Heartland is with an H not h. But I have seen it work with the h. If you cannot connect to the address try geocities.com to see if you can connect, if yes, then you may have an error with the address you are typing in. As I told you last week, I'd sent to Northumberland County to see what they had in way of publications to help us with the church records and got an answer yesterday in the mail. I got back from them two sheets of paper with their printed materials available for sale and also a form letter to Dear Researcher... no great shakes this form letter but on the bottom of it is a written message which reads: "Here are 2 publications lists - neither spells out church records for the Wolverton family - but we do have a large amount of info on this family." The note is signed by what looks to be J.L. and the last name is Pensyl........not unfamiliar that name. I also had received copies of pages from the Bell book of Wolverton sheets from friendly person in Iowa and also some copies of pages from the "History of Northumberland" by Floyd. Both of these are okey for starting someone in the right direction and I've had copies out of the Floyd book on the Reeds for years but there's a lot of error in these kinds of books. I wish it weren't true.. Both of these books are also available in reprint from the Society for those of you who don't already know this. Hope this helps you Onoldah. I will be writing tomorrow for further information on what they have. Josie josie@voyager.net mickey's Law: "You can't fall off the floor."

    3. For your interest, here is the article about the Maiser shutdown that appeared in the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION newspaper on Wednesday, May 14th: E-mail mishap halts genealogy service Researchers, buffs lose a valuable tool by Art Kramer STAFF WRITER A Dunwoody retailer said he unwittingly started a chain of junk e-mail that undermined one of the most popular exchanges of genealogy information on the Intenet. The shutdown is depriving tens of thousands of genealogy buffs of their most effective online research tool, said John Rigdon, national coordinator of The USGenWeb Project, a genealogy clearinghouse on the World Wide Web. The exchange, called Maiser, is a collection of mailing lists for those trading research about their ancestors. Many genealogy buffs subscribe to several lists, keyed to cities, towns, regions or family surnames. It's not unusual for a genealogy hobbyist to sift through several hundred list-sent messages daily, in search of a clue that points to a distant ancestor. Maiser, the largest collection of detailed lists with 40,000 subscribers, was forced off the Net last week after being used as a fake return address to hide the identity of a junk e-mailer. The disaster began when Sam Khuri, general manager of Benchmart Print Supply, sent a $100 money order to the post office box of a company that promised to advertise his service to 50,000 potential customers. "If I knew what they were going to do, I never would have sent the money," said Khuri, whose company recycles toner cartridges for copiers. The contractor, whose identity Khuri said he lost in a computer crash of his own, e-mailed thousands of ads touting Khuri's service last week. The junk e-mail was routed through Indiana University computers, making it appear the ads had come from the same computers that are home to the genealogy lists. The tactic of forging return addresses, making an uninvolved third party appear to be the sender of junk e-mail, is a common one. Such practices prompted several online services, including CompuServe and Prodigy, to get federal courts to help them bar junk e-mailers from their services. Larry Stephens, an Indiana University official who organized the groups as a hobby over the past three years, was forced to shut them down Friday rather than let them appear to be the source of the junk e-mail. Stephens said he couldn't risk furthering the perception that the junk e-mail was somehow connected to the university. "The loss of these mailing lists is devastating," Rigdon said. "We've lost approximately one-third of our backbone for genealogy research. About 20,000 daily users of the Internet have been effectively left with no communication." Stephens may reopen some of the regional lists this week if he can find software that can't be commandeered by junk e- mailers, but with the added security burden, he said it's unlikely he will revive the surname lists. Robert Turner, 52, a postal clerk in Huntsville, Ala., and a descendant of traveling blacksmith David Turner, bemoaned the demise of the surname lists. Turner and his wife, Winona Turner, added 4,000 ancestors to their family tree in the 30 years before they computerized their search, but 20,000 more in just 16 months online. Without the surname lists, said Turner, looking for his ancestors "will be akin to driving down a dark country road with no headlights."
