Hello, I am researching a certain LOUIS WOLF spelled variously (LOUIS WOLFFE, LOUIS WOLFE, LEWIS WOLF, LUDWIG WOLFFE, LUDWIG WOLF). He was born around 1833 and says he was from Alsace. He might have been from Baden-Wuerttemberg. He says he was Jewish but married a Catholic named Maria Antonia Ramona Place between 1862-1865. She was born in Santa Barbara of a West Indian African father and a Chumash Indian (Native American) mother. They were mentioned in H H Jackson's novel, "Ramona," and were the Hartzels in that novel. Wolf says he came to California in 1852 and to Temecula in 1858. He had a store with either Charles or Samuel Prager of Los Angeles. The Pragers were merchants in early Los Angeles and helped to start the Jewish Synagogue on Wilshire. They were from Prussia. Wolf also hired Simon Levi of San Diego who later became a prominent businessman in that city. Wolf's parentage, I believe, could answer many questions about his coming to San Francisco and his association with the Pragers in Los Angeles. Any help would be appreciated and will be duly noted in my writings. Thanks Dick Diamond 5220 High Street Bay City OR 97107 diamond@oregoncoast.com
