Etherton, 81, of Springfield died Sunday, May 8, 2005, at VA Illiana Health Care System in Danville. He was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Springfield, the son of Reginald and Frances Wolf Etherton. He married Joyce E. Thetford in 1972. Mr. Etherton graduated from Brown's Business College with a degree in business management and accounting. He was an accountant at Allis-Chalmers until 1960 and retired from the Illinois Department of Revenue in 1985 after 25 years. He also worked for the IRS during tax season and was a volunteer for the VITA Program. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving for a year and a half in the Air Corps and three and a half years in the Army. He also served in the Marine Corps Reserve for six years and was called to active duty in August of 1950 and was a drill instructor in Parris Island, S.C., and Annapolis, Md. He retired from the Illinois National Guard in 1963 and had received many medals and ribbons. He was a member of Church of the Little Flower, the 3rd and 4th degree of Knights of Columbus, Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks 158 and Disabled Veterans 15. Survivors: wife, Joyce; daughter, Kaye Ellen Britten of Springfield; stepson, Michael James Thetford of Springfield; two grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Merle W. Long and Allan Francis Long, both of California; and several cousins. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday, Church of the Little Flower, the Rev. Chuck Edwards officiating. Burial: Calvary Cemetery.
