This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wolf / Wolff Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4JXBAIB/1354 Message Board Post: I am looking for information on one Alfred or Dieter Wolf, who lived in southern Virginia in the 1960s. One of the two lived with his wife (Diane, I think) and children (Marla, Anthony and Alfred Jr.) in Southern Virginia. There are photos of the family in Hampton as well as in Lynchburg. He served in the US armed forces and did either his basic training or his AIT at Fort Knox, KY. He later served in Wildflecken, Germany in the 1950s. After his military service he graduated from the University of Maryland. His family originally comes from Sprottau (now Szprotawa) where they lived on Steinweg 6a. The father's name is Alois Wolf, the mother's name is Anni Wolf (deceased 1933). The father married again in 1935 at St. Peter & Paul church (not sure about location). Father was killed at the beginning of 1945 near Murmansk. Attached is an image of the father. There are two sons in the Wolf family. Dieter, whom I believe to be the older one, and Alfred, whom I believe to be the younger one. I am not sure which of the two the photographs follow, although I believe it is Alfred, the younger one, who joined the US armed forces and went on to live in Virginia. If anyone has any information about the family, please email me. I have found a large German-language photo album chronicling the family from 1933 until the mid-60s when the younger son, Alfred Junior, passed away at the age of 2. The album appears to have been kept by the mother as a lot of photos sent back from military service have references along the lines of "to mother" and one of the photos of Alois reads, "my beloved Alois".

By the way here in my notes I found somebody's Wolf's listed in a confederate pension record index for Arkansas. for Ashley county Wolf C. C. applied 1902 1903 for Drew County Wolf A T didn't write down the info. off hand I can't remember the book that the FHC has microfiche of that has the index but a search at familysearch.org will bring it up. There is also an excellent website for the civil war in Arkansas that a google search will bring up with lots of info on the soldiers there and knowledgable people on the linked arkansas civil war message board. Sorry, I lack access to websites at the moment so you'll have to find the links if you think they may be yours. Happy Hunting! Rhonda

I'm researching AMBS/ARNDT/BLATTNER/HAACK/KIEFER/RANARD/WEISHAAR/WOLFF/WOLF/WOLFE/YOST My WOLFF/WOLF/WOLFE ancestors emigrated from Schonenbourg, Weissembourg, Alsace to America ca 1842, settled in Bloom, Cook Co., IL and then went to Minnesota in the mid-1880's, settling on farms near St. Peter, Nicollet Co., MN and in Osseo, Hennepin Co., MN. The name shows as WOLFF in the 1836 Census of Schoenenbourg, Weissembourg, Alsace. It then shows as WOLF in early U.S. Census reports, and later, as WOLFE in birth, marriage and death certificates, with one exception. Samuel Wolf son of Jacob Wolf & Freda___ came to the US in about 1890-1892. He was a butcher living in Manhattan his whole life (as far as we know). Jewish, possibly from the Black Forest. Family legend has either Jacob or another relative a Major in the Dead Head Hussars and the first thru the Arch de Triumph during the Franco Prussina Wars. Samuel is supposedly born May 12, 1879, died 28 Sept 1939 843 Columbus Ave, New York City, New York. He may have had a first family before having a child with Anna Fischer from Augsburg. Samuel's son has said that the family was "military" family and the family business was butcher shops, not sure if it was the maternal or paternal side. There is a Major Julius Eduard Paul Wolff Born 13/06/1846 in Jnowrazlaw in Posen ( province in Prussia) His Father Eduard Justzrath Wolff His Mother Adelheid Baeckmann He served in the 2. Leib Husaren Regt. Kaiserin Nr. 2 (2. LHR 2) from 1866 until 1891 We have no way of proving that this man is related to us. Anyone out there familiar with these people???? Thanks Judy Wolf
