I have refrained from sending this but since one of my lists has fallen victim to this stupid hoax, I am going to waste my time and your time issuing a warning. The Jdbgmgr hoax is now going around and slowly by slowly seems like many of the lists I am on have been victimized by naive people thinking they are doing everyone a favor. This is how it works...you get a message from someone saying if you have this particular file on your computer (has a teddy bear icon) you not only should delete the file but send this message to everyone in your address book because you have a virus and now you have passed it on to everyone else. So, the innocent person then sends it to everyone in their address book, including mailing lists. And people who really don't know anything about computers, delete the file and send the message on. Besides clogging up cyberspace with all these useless harmful messages, the file you delete is a legitimate Windows file. Okay, here is a site that will explain it in a technical manner: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/jdbgmgr.exe.file.hoax.html At the listowner of many lists, I have always felt it was important for anyone using a computer to be knowledgeable about viruses, worms and hoaxes and not only allowed warnings and discussions about them on the list, but sent out many warnings, like this, myself. Now, I will ask all of you to please check with me first OFF LIST, about any virus warning you want to send to the list, otherwise you risk losing your right to post to the list. 2nd point...please don't believe these posts, even if they are from a friend or relative without checking them out first. Now, if you can't find anything about them on the internet, write to the list and ask us about them. (but don't send the warning) I have no problems about discussing this matter on list. Thanks for any info you can share. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
