The surname PHIPPS is substantially represented in both the Bath, Somerset and Nantgarw/Cardiff, Wales (1800 A.D.) components of my family tree - particularly where it merges with the BREWER family of Bath. Unsubstantiated family guesswork/rumour/chat suggests that PHIPPS is a diminutive of an Italian surname e.g. PHIPPLIANO etc., etc., or whatever. I have a completely open mind about the matter. That having been said however, I have to admit that photographs of the PHIPPS family which span more or less a century - late 1800's onwards - do show both male and female members with very convincing Italian features. Does any List Member have a view to offer about PHIPPS being an Anglicised version of an Italian surname? All ideas/thoughts will be welcomed. Alec Palmer. i. iii. mmii.
