    1. [Swansea] The origins of surname PHIPPS
    2. The surname PHIPPS is substantially represented in both the Bath, Somerset and Nantgarw/Cardiff, Wales (1800 A.D.) components of my family tree - particularly where it merges with the BREWER family of Bath. Unsubstantiated family guesswork/rumour/chat suggests that PHIPPS is a diminutive of an Italian surname e.g. PHIPPLIANO etc., etc., or whatever. I have a completely open mind about the matter. That having been said however, I have to admit that photographs of the PHIPPS family which span more or less a century - late 1800's onwards - do show both male and female members with very convincing Italian features. Does any List Member have a view to offer about PHIPPS being an Anglicised version of an Italian surname? All ideas/thoughts will be welcomed. Alec Palmer. i. iii. mmii.

    1. [Swansea] Swansea prison
    2. Hi Tom Many thanks for looking for OWEN. I am not sure what dates he would have been there, it may have been earlier or as you suggest in 1901. It is a family legend that one of our OWEN ancestors worked at the prison (the legend says he was a hangman but that may be exaggeration!). At the suggestion of one lister I have written to the prison governor but haven't heard anything yet. Thanks again, Valerie

    1. [Swansea] Another virsus/worm warning...please take heed
    2. Pat Connors
    3. Description: Worm/Ngvck is an Internet worm that spreads through e-mail by using addresses it collects in the Microsoft Outlook Address Book. The worm arrives through e-mail in the following format: Subject: Important: Windows update Body: Hey, at work we are applying this update because it makes Windows over 50% faster and more secure. I thought I should forward it as you may like it. Attachment: MS02-010.exe If executed, the worm copies itself in the root directory under the filename "MS02-010.exe". Additionally, the file "SHARP.VBS" gets added. The file SHARP.VBS is created temporary, it automatically deletes itself after another execution. No autostart - entries are created. It will display a message box with the following text, "You're infected with Win32.HLLP.Sharp, written in C#, by Gigabyte/Metaphase" The original filename received, "MS02-010.exe". Again, I warn you, don't open attachments. This one is going to look pretty legitimate because it will come from someone who has your email address in their Address Book, might even be a relative. Be careful. No one on the list has reported getting it yet. If you get one from someone on this list, let me know off list, please. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002

    3. There is a problem with Rootsweb mailing lists on one particular server. Some of my lists happen to be on that server. I am receiving bounce after bounce after bounce. Rootsweb is trying to solve the problem but you may inadvertently be unsubbed because of three bounces. If you stop getting mail from a list, you should first check out the archives to see if there has been mail. If you have been unsubbed, you can either resub or email me and I'll unsub you. 1. [Swansea] DANIEL - New to list & Newspapers
    2. Mike Thomas
    3. Hi, I am looking to hear from anybody with any information or suggestions about the following little brick wall: A relative of mine Mary ELLIS married a Samuel DANIEL c. 1870's and was living with him in Swansea in 1881. His occupation was Newspaper Publisher. They had children but I have not been able to find them or name them. Mary died in 1901 and I have a picture of her gravestone. Samuel was born in Monmouthshire. Any ideas as to how I could proceed. I know that Mary was born in Brecon and I have been able to trace many of her siblings - but she and her husband and family remain a mystery. Hopefully somebody might have some helpful thoughts about this - it would be a real peach to reconnect with this branch of my family. I do have their Swansea address - thanks to the LDS discs for 1881. Cheers Mike Thomas Helston Cornwall

    1. [Swansea] A new Welsh Genealogy CD - Llywel & Llanddeusant
    2. Nina Jenkins
    3. I am posting this message to all South Wales and Welsh general mailing lists in the hope that it will be of interest? I should be pleased if you would forward it to anyone relevant you think I've missed. Also, my apologies to those on the Carmarthenshire list who have had a double dose of it all! This new CD is of a book called "Roots and Branches" that lists the main families of Llanddeusant (Carm) the adjacent parish of Llywel (Brec) during the 18th and 19th centuries. It gives the marriages, children, farm and other locations and much more. It was originally privately published by Mr T O Evans, now deceased, of Trecastell, and his family have agreed to allow the book to be put onto CD. As the book contains many, many families with marriages, deaths, baptisms of children, dozens of similar names, but no index, a CD with a search facility will make it so much more accessible. It is now available from http://www.archivecdbooks.org . You can follow the links to Latest Releases or just go direct to the Welsh pages where you will find the title under Breconshire .. by the time you read this it may have also been cross referenced under Carmarthenshire. I am pleased that the cost has been kept low, only £8.50 for overseas customers, £9.99 inc VAT for UK purchasers. Mr Evans, who wrote the book is sadly now deceased, but his widow is still alive, and should more than 100 CD's be sold, she will then start to receive a small royalty. This isn't much, but she and her children are just proud to see that Mr Evans lifetime's work is going to continue to be available to all. For your information, I don't have any financial interest in any of this myself. I am dealing with the Archive CD Books Project as part of my job. As an owner of a copy of the unindexed Roots and Branches and an avid Welsh family historian also, I thought that getting it put on CD would make it more accessible and user friendly, so I approached the project and then Mr Evans family and eventually it has all come together. 1. Re: [Swansea] Greek or Russian......NEKREWS
    2. J S Coleman
    3. The answer is probably pitwood. The deep mining industry needed lots of cheap softwood for pitprops, and of course building the houses for a rapidly-expanding population all over the mining valleys and the coal ports also needed timber. Norway and Sweden were important suppliers - hence the Norwegian churches in Cardiff and Swansea docks - but other Baltic countries may have been involved, and of course sailors can join a ship in one port, not necessarily their home, and leave it in another. Swansea has a lot of names of Scandinavian origin - Olsen, Nielsen, Pedersen, Knutsen and so on, and among the Norwegians in Cardiff were Roald Dahl's family. Swansea also had a metal-extracting industry in the Swansea valley which meant specialist German workers came in to install and run Siemens and other processes, so there are German names that go back over a hundred years too. It looks as if my great-great-grandfather collected a new crew member for his coasting vessel in Cornwall in the 1860s and discharged him in Swansea, who went on to establish a dynasty still in Swansea now. As it is someone else's family I won't give a name, but the ship's crew list said he was from Malta, whereas in later years he said he was from Sicily. 3. Hi List I need some help on my family name of NEKREWS, to solve once and for all the origins of the name. We know the name first appears In the late 1700's although the first NEKREWS probably arrived a little earlier. Does any one know the countries that traded In Swansea at the time? And the most likely cargo, I know coal will feature strongly. An accepted theory In the family Is that he was probably a Greek sailor, but researching around the name with slight variations suggests a Baltic country. The one remaining problem Is would a sailor from abroad have named all his children with what were at the time English names William, Thomas etc.. I don't know If I should cook Kleftico or Goulash.. Any suggestions welcome... Carol --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.323 / Virus Database: 180 - Release Date: 2/8/02
