    3. Hi list, I just managed to get on the 1901 census. I'm looking for my Great Grandad. William John Davies, born 1890 in Swansea. My Auntie Jean has a snuff box of his that says Cockett 1886, we all assumed he was from Cockett but that may not be true as he wasn't born in 1886. Anyway his Dad may have been Thomas Davies. So the WJ Davies from Cockett on the 1901 would be 12yrs old. parents John J Davies and Mary, sister Susan 9yrs old. These guys were in Cockett Sketty, whatever that is. I also found a WJ Davies visiting at 41 Balaclava Street, 10yrs old. and a WJ Davies living at Brynmor Road. I'm no closer to finding GGramps than I was before, and it cost me an arm and a leg to get that. So here's what I do Know. William John DAVIES born 1890 sister Sue married Will LEWIS brother Davie DAVIES Their father possibly Thomas DAVIES Mom died in childbirth with one of the kids. Dad remarried and had, Annie DAVIES, Sarah DAVIES, Ben DAVIES, Tommy DAVIES, Bobby DAVIES. Cousins of my GGramps were, Mabel DAVIES, Sarah DAVIES, Tom DAVIES, Davie DAVIES, who had a son named Lyndon DAVIES. Most of the cousins had grocery stores and my Ggrandparents would walk from Llanelli to Loughor, cause they got a deal on butter from the rellies. Does anyone have any of these people and can help me with William John DAVIES. Sorry to be so long winded. Dianne in Canada, Yorkshire born and bred.

    3. In 1987 there was an exhibition of paintings at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Alexandra Road, Swansea entitled ' Under Sail : Swansea Cutters, Tallships and Seascapes 1830-1880.' While my wife and I were strolling through pleasantly sunny Swansea we discovered that the hardback version of the book published to accompany that exhibition was on sale at the gallery at 4UKP, a considerable bargain for 120 pages almost every one of which has a b&w or colour photo of a 19th-century painting of shipping associated with Swansea, including some of the famous copper barques that sailed round Cape Horn , like the Zeta and the Eta, and a number of pilot cutters. The artists featured are James HARRIS 1810-1887, James Harris junr 1847-1925, George Chambers 1803-1840, Edward Duncan RWS 1803-1882, the Rev Calvert R. Jones 1804-1877 (including some reproductions of early photos) and Henry B Birchall, fl 1840-1850. 4 of the colour plates are marred by slight misalignment of different colours. I have not yet checked whether the gallery would take orders by post - I can't see why not. glynn.vivian.gallery@swansea.gov.uk ; www.swansea.gov.uk/glynnvivian/ I have no financial interest other than as a Swansea ratepayer whose rates help to maintain the gallery. The current exhibition 'Lowry in Wales' includes L S Lowry's views of Ebbw Vale and Bargoed. Jeff Swansea

    2. Hello, I have just joined the list. My gg grandfather was Richard Price. he was born about 1815, in Swansea. He married a Margaret ? and they had two sons, William about 1840 and my ggrandfather Philip about 1835. My grandfather was David Price, who first married a Martha Thomas and had a son Philip in 1895. Philip was killed in the great war 1915 Dardanelles. I don't know when Martha died, but David married Laura Preece in Cardiff 1913. I would like to know something about Richard and Margaret. I have them on the 1851 census but although they say they were born in Swansea, I can't find any trace of them on the 1841 census. Just hoping that someone on this list is looking at the same people. any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers, Deri

    3. Sorry to tell you this but a new virus/worm is making it's way around. I noticed first thing this morning and now have received over 20 infected emails, all looking they they are posts to mailing lists. The ones I got this morning all had English list names and now others are coming in tonight with US list names. Probably a time zone thing. The worm/virus is called W32.Bugbear. You can read all about it at: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.bugbear@mm.html I am going to be really blunt about this because I am darn tired of fending off these emails, plus I always have to be in the room when I am downloading my mail because my Norton Antivirus program is catching them all. People on the mailing lists are STILL NOT keeping their anti-virus software current. You just can't have Norton or McAfee and think you are safe! You need to subscribe to those programs so that every time you boot up your computer they automatically check to see if new virus/worms are out there ready to attack and then they update your computer. Please take responsibility for you computer and do what's right. If you can't afford it then don't get on mailing lists with your computer. Go to your nearest library and use theirs. Sorry for the speech to those 99% of us who are responsible. If you have questions, I will be more than happy to help you, email me off or on list. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002
