    3. Hi Dianne, Marriage certificate would show him as widower. Census doesn't differentiate. Cockett is part of Fforestfach, but the part that, in 1901, was in Cockett Parish as opposed to Llangyfelach Parish. In 1881 (& possibly 1891) Census it would probably have been "Swansea Higher". Do you have an address from the 1901? The census was in April. Let me know if I can be of anymore help. 3. Hi.Chris. Though I am not able to assist you in your search for the "John Jones" you are enquiring about, I have an amusing thought. My name is John Jones too, the only other "John Jones" I have so fa discovered in my treeis my gt.gt.gt Grandfather. He was a "John Jones" of Swansea my line comes down via his son "William Jones", now I have only discovered 1 other son to "John Jones" so far and he was a "David". I am sure there must have been a "John" too, and that if there was a "John" then he would have probably had a sone named "John" who may or may not have been your "John Jones" because the family also moved up valley generation to generation. What brings a smile is the fact that you are seeking for a namesake of mine that could be relative of mine, and you live in South Bend, Indiana which is just a few miles from where I met my wife :-) We lived in Bristol nr. SB for a year before coming back to Wales in 1988. What a small and strange world this truly is. Much success in your searches. 1. Re: [Swansea] Men-only funerals (was William John Davies)

    3. It was very common practice in Wales for the interment or cremation to be 'Men only', though normally at a service at a church, chapel, or funeral home beforehand ladies would be present. It was not the practice for children to attend. Thinking back I can recall men-only funerals in the late 1970s, but by the mid-1980s the tradition seems to have changed, though as in all social customs there was probably a gradual change as the percentages of men-only interments or cremations decreased. My wife's family from England were not familiar with a men-only tradition, so it may have been distinctively Welsh. So does anyone know of a church near there, that would be a start cause I'm hoping his parents were mentioned on his gravestone, and as I live in Canada now, I'm also hoping someone who lives in Loughor might like to take a walk to the church yard on the next sunny day, maybe the dog needs a walk or something. I don't want to put anyone out, any little bit of help is greatly appreciated. Here's the info. William John DAVIES, born 1890, died 1970something, husband of Annie Boston DOWNES, of course it may say Ann DAVIES, She might be there with him, but he died first, she died in the 1980's sometime. sorry bout the length thing again. Dianne in Canada, Yorkshire born and bred.

    3. Hi Betsy. You asked about "Railey" in Swansea on the 1851 census. Sorry dear, there appears to be no "Railey" in Glamorgan in 1851. Good Luck John. ----- Original Message ----- From: Betsy Rubel To: WLS-SWANSEA-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, October 20, 2002 2:14 PM Subject: [Swansea] Railey I am so excited! I found my Irish COLLINS ancestors in Swansea. So far the only birth registered that I can find is Daniel J Collins but I found his mothers maiden name. I wonder if anyone has access to 1851 Census? I know there were other children and wonder if perhaps they were with RAILEY family...Could any one do a quick check for RAILEY in Swansea? If there are any, I will grab the film from the FHL... 1. [Swansea] 1891 CENSUS
    2. new suscriber .Would any "lister" be so kind and see if my grandparents were living in Swansea in 1891 the 1st of their children was born there in 1892 so am assuming they got married in 1891 but so far cannot trace their marriage .Their names were Howell Davies born Carmarthan 1862 and Margaret Williams born Pembrokeshire 1886/68 [Solva] If not married would it please be possible to locate them as living as "boarders" maybe. I know I am asking a lot but have been looking for a long time now and am getting desperate.Regards Alun.
