    3. Hi Elida I hope you don't mind my posting this back to the list , just in case I have unintentionally given others the same wrong impression as well. As the administrator for the three lists involved I know that, as of tonight, WLS-Pem has 46 subscribers whereas the Dyfed list has 432.[and of course they don't all have Pem interests]. A week or so ago, WLS-Pem only had about 25 subscribers, so it is growing nicely. WLS-Pem certainly isn't a small branch of Dyfed-L, it will be whatever you, the subscribers , make it. I am on record on Dyfed-L as saying that I believe the new county based lists will largely take over from Dyfed-L in due course, it may be sooner than I thought. As I don't know whether there are subscribers to WLS-Pem that aren't fully aware of the position I was pointing out that right now the greater size and greater activity of the Dyfed list makes it more likely that you will get advice/make contacts on Pem matters on it. But it isn't a case of "instead of" but "as well as". That may well change as WLS-Pem develops, I don't expect to post such a message for much longer on this list. That's it, I hope that has "cleared the air" for you Elida . Gareth List Administrator for Dyfed, CGN & PEM. 3. Hi Gareth, I understand what you are telling Elida, but I didn't post on Dyfed because it would mean people who subscribe to Pemb and Dyfed will be getting the same message twice. Wouldn't it be simpler to put a reminder post on Dyfed that the new Pemb list is now getting established and suggest that those interested in Pembrokeshire, might like to take a look. I am reluctant to subscribe to another list as the Carmarthenshire and Glamorgan lists keep me busy. I don't think I could handle another busy list. Anyway, just a few thoughts. Kate

    3. Kate, This works two ways --- people like me, who've participated on the Dyfed list since its inception in early '98 and also volunteer for lookups via the South/West Wales Lookup Exchange, also do not wish to have to subscribe to the new county lists in order to field queries posted there, as that means we'll be monitoring 4 lists in order to help new researchers. The Dyfed list covers Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire and the number of queries for any specific county are not that numerous. Additionally, there are *many* people subscribed to the Dyfed list who have overlapping research interests. If you spend a lot of time researching this area, it becomes apparent that many families moved from one county to the next. These people on the Dyfed list have a wealth of resources at hand and are willing to answer queries posted by new researchers but may not be interested in monitoring 4 different lists in order to help new people. Because of the many overlapping situations, one would be constantly recommending that people also subscribe to the next county list. At the moment, the Dyfed list offers a great deal of historical background on this area and any new researcher cannot help but to learn quite a lot by subscribing to it. Simply put, if you subscribe only to the new county list, you'll be missing out on a great deal of helpful responses to your queries as they'll only reach a limited number of people (many of whom will be new to Welsh research themselves and won't be able to offer solutions), until such time as the amount of traffic exceeds the viability of having a Dyfed list and going completely over to the specific county lists. 3. Thanks for the input Kate. It could be that Dyfed-L listers have heard enough from me recently on the new lists subject but I'll copy this there, and CGN, to keep them up to date with matters. As Dyfed-L [ 432 ] is still very much bigger than WLS-Pem[ 46 ] and WLS-Cgn [ 24 ] in subscriber numbers and still *does* cover Pem, Cgn and Cmn then of course it makes sense from a researcher's point of view to use Dyfed-L as well , even to the extent of double posting. It's early days yet but whilst the new lists are getting established, and the Dyfed list's function is unchanged, then some duplicate mail is the least of our problems, I think. I would beg to differ on one point you make, I would never have described Dyfed-L as a busy list, Glamorgan, yes. My suggested "survival" plan for you is to subscribe to all the lists in Digest mode, and only open mails that look of interest to you personally. I do realise that does require us all to give a little bit more thought to creating relevant subject line content ! Gareth List Administrator for Dyfed, CGN & PEM.
