There were a John Stephens, aged 25-29, blacksmith and an Ann Stephens aged 20-24 in Castlemartin (ref HO107/1443/3, Castlemartin, folio 4, page 3). I wonder whether this was them, having left James with his maternal grandparents in Narberth? (The James mentioned above was at ref HO107/1448/18 or 19, Narberth, folio 25, page 10.) Do you have Joseph's birth certificate or marriage certificate and does the information about his father match the above? I would hazard a guess that John and Ann married in Narberth between 1837 and 1840. No John Stephens marriage in Narberth or Castlemartin Hundreds in the 1813-37 marriage index. Gerry Lewis
