    3. Hi, I'm new to the list. I live in New Zealand, although I am from Newport, Mon, originally. I have recently been sent the Wills of my GGGGG'grandparents. Samuel Levi, and Mary Levi, nee Blear. They lived in Pembroke, either Haverfordwest or St Mary's. The wills are date 1793[Samuel] and Mary's is 1805. In the Wills I see they have the following children:- George, he is mentioned only in his Father's Will. Samuel, he married Catherine Baker, they lived in Monmouthshire Mary, she m Thomas Makeig, of Scotland in the town of Cardigan Elizabeth, m John Mathias/Matthias of Haverfordwest Matilda m ? Gibbs. Other names mentioned are Captain Brooks, who 'occupies' a house in the 'Green Mill Pond' St Mary's Parish. The witnesses of Samuel's Will were Joshua Allen Thos. Woods John Rees Mary's Will has a lot more detail. In it she names her four remaining children and their spouses. She makes John Mathias/Matthias the trustees of her Will also. There is a house in St Michaels Parish, occupied by Jeremiah Phillips Tanner. The witnesses are Geo Bowling [Pembroke] Wm Jones, looks like Meicer, Pembroke. Mary Runwa or Kunwa Pembroke. Samuel is presumed to be a German Jew, he or his father came from Frankfurt am Main. He came with his brother Moses. Does anyone know of this family, the property/people mentioned, or have connections with them? Diolch yn Fawr Phyllis

    3. Dear Phyllis, The Pembrokeshire marriage records, particularly for the Haverfordwest St. Mary area, do not show the Levi name in either male or female marriages pre-1837, but there are still clues from the information you provided. I have either corresponded with someone about the Makeig name, or have seen it on a document recently....so I'll give it some more thought. I did find that the Will of a Thomas Makeig of St. Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire, was proved in 1838 ....and Cardigan is close to St. Dogmaels. This led me to look in some random Land Tax records I have, and a "Mr. Mackeig" was apparently the tenant at Parkypratt, St. Dogmaels, in 1831. This property had long been owned by the Davies family, and at this time, Thomas Davies Esq. was proprietor. Unfortunately, Makeig would be dead before the 1841 census, but other family members may have settled close by. You may care to purchase his will on the offchance, or Thomas's death certificate, which is probably registered in the Cards. district. There are many John Mathias/Matthias in Pembrokeshire, so I have not culled him from the flock, but as far as Matilda's Gibbs husband is concerned, perhaps he was the Thomas Gibbs of St. Mary's Haverfordwest whose will was proved in 1819 or the John Gibbs of Cardigan whose will was proved in 1842. As to the witness names you mentioned, several of the surnames were prominent in Pembrokeshire, and Wm. Jones was probably a Mercer. Runwa was definitely a Pembrokeshire surname. If other Listers can't supply more accurate information, purchase of the will abstracts from Haverfordwest Records Office may give enough information for you to pursue the Makeig and Gibbs families further. Bettye Kirkwood, Australia. PS. Managed to catch this in Outbox before sending.....have just stumbled across a marriage record for Thomas Makeig June 13, 1793 to Sarah Stone at Clydey Pembrokeshire, so this Thomas might be son of Thomas. When did your Mary Levi marry Thomas Makeig? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Len and Phyll Pearson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 14, 2004 10:09 AM Subject: [WLS-PEM] Levi/Baker > Hi, > > I'm new to the list.
