    1. Martha Griffiths

    3. Hello, I am trying to find a birth date for a Martha Griffiths, but I am finding it very difficult because there are a few persons with the same name & also the same named father which is William Griffiths, I have a marriage certificate here with Martha being 28 years of age in the year 1890, she married a William Roberts, he was living at Long Mains Monkton & Martha was living at Portclew, Lamphey, her father was a Quarryman at that time. she died in Dec 1898 age 37 in Pembroke she left 4 children their names being, John Henry, Elizabeth, Austin & Louisa, Elizabeth was also known as Annie Elizabeth & she married her cousin Arthur Bernard Roberts. If it is possible can anyone find out who this Martha is. Thank you very much. Rhiannon

    3. Could someone on the list please look up Berry Hill on the Newport censuses from 1871 onwards and see if a John Laugharne is mentioned as a servant there? If so I'm interested in discovering where and when he was born. I'm following up a story in Martin Lewis "Newport Pem. and Fishguard Revisited" pub 2003 about a John Laugharne from Berry Hill who drowned in the Nevern estuary (no date given but it was sometime before 1894 when the bridge was built). I'm curious to know whether this John Laugharne is connected to any of the Laugharnes of Dinas and Newport that I'm researching. Best wishes Vivien http://www.vivienboyes.co.uk

    1. JENKINS
    2. Hello everyone, I am new to this list and would be very pleased to receive some help regarding a man named ABEDNEGO JENKINS. This man spent most of his adult life in Carmarthenshire and thanks to some very good help from the CMN list I know something of his life there as a Calvinistic Methodist Minister. However, my problem is that I can't find his birth. According to the 1881 census he was born in St Clears in about 1818 so I had thought he would be easy to find having such an unusual first name. But I have failed so far. I have been wondering if it is possible that he was given a different name when christened and later adopted the name Abednego perhaps in connection with his religion. If anyone has got any thoughts about how I can find the birth of Abednego JENKINS I would be so pleased to hear them as I have completely run out of ideas now. Thanks in anticipation, Jan

    3. Dear Jan and Bill, The marriage of David William and Martha Evan took place at St. Dogmaels 07/11/1823. She does not have the "es" added to her name in the marriage index. I could not find a marriage of an Evan or Evans to a Martha at St. Dogmaels in the pre 1813 marriages, so she could have married in another parish. Bill may have other information. I have an interest in earlier Evan/s in St, Dogmaels.,,,,but it is another of the common surnames. Bettye Kirkwood. 2. Barry Johnson
    3. Pat - As I'm sure several other listers will confirm, the Anchor Line's CITY OF ROME entered Milford Haven (not Milford Docks, which had opened in Sep 1888) from NY on 16 Oct 1889, and landed 134 passengers (mostly Barnum's Circus people) via the GAEL tender. No passengers were embarked for a crossing to N.America. On 6 Dec 1898, the Canadian Steamship Company's GASPESIA arrived from Liverpool, and entered the Dock to load cargo. She then anchored in the Haven where she picked up about 40 passengers (mostly representatives of the companies involved in the enterprise, and their guests, rather than emigrants) via the ALLIGATOR tender, and sailed on 8 Dec, bound for Paspebiac (in the Gulf of St Lawrence). In the words of J.R.Rees, "The ship never returned and had no successor." So the chances of anyone's ancestor having sailed from Milford are very slim indeed! 3. Thankyou Bill for the info re St. Dogmellsl/Dogwells. Don't have much information but what I do have follows: > Was Mary or Ann's age given? > The 1851 Census information I have (Cardiff) lists Mary as 25 years, and Ann (living at same address) as 19 years, both born in St. Dogmaels. This leads me to believe Ann and Mary were related. By the 1861 Census Mary had died and Ann had married James NICHOLAS, the widower. >What was David Williams' occupation? > Apparently he was a Mason. > Who was Ann's father? > > Don't know. > >I have the 1841 census for St Dogmaels and it contains 40 Mary Williams, >some 10 of whom were of marriageable age by 1848. He is a little stuck at the moment and I am trying to help him sort out the information he already has and make sure that he has the right family before we go any further. Would you know if any ships sailed from Milford Haven to America from around 1880 onwards? This is the place that he has been told is where his ancestors sailed from. I don't know if anyone on the Dyfed list may know or if you know of anyone who may have a specific interest in this particular port. I wanted to know if there were any sailing passenger lists available to search. If you aren't sure would you mind asking on list on my behalf, I wou;ld be most grateful. 1. Re: [WLS-PEM] NICHOLAS, VAUGHAN, DAVIES, THOMAS AND WILLIAMS
    2. Hello Jan, Firstly St Dogmells(Dogmaels modern spelling) and St Dogwells: yes, they are different parishes in Pembrokeshire. St Dogmaels is across the river from Cardigan Town and has the larger population. It produced a lot of seafarers, many of whom migrated to Cardiff and Newport(Mon) in the 19th century. St Dogwells is midway between Haverfordwest and Fishguard - it is a bit closer to Maenclochog, but neither is next door. You need a map of the area - I hope you have one. Secondly the marriages: have you the full details? Was Mary or Ann's age given? What was David Williams' occupation? Who was Ann's father? I have the 1841 census for St Dogmaels and it contains 40 Mary Williams, some 10 of whom were of marriageable age by 1848. However, you need to establish whether you are looking in St Dogmells or St Dogwells. The oldest woman was Mary Davies from Blaenporth at 103. There are a total of 91 people over the age of 90. On the other end of the scale there were 26,390 children aged 10 or under. 3. Dear Christopher, I had no luck in identifying a marriage at Loveston in the Pemb. index which would result in Mary's birth in 1829. In fact I could not see any Evans against Loveston, so would imagine her parents may have married in an adjoining parish. Because I could not find any post 1813 I decided to look pre-1813, and a George Evans 1802 at Loveston married Margaret Williams.......this is not much help to you, unless of course they happened to be Mary's grandparents, but with such a common name as Evans it may be hard to prove. As the marriage you mentioned took place after certificates were issued, perhaps you can find the couple in the free BDM and identify their marriage place. The certificate would certainly give you much valuable information. 3. Hello, I am new to this list and wondered if anyone out there could help me with information about my ancestors. 1. Morris NICHOLAS, born c. 1789, married Elizabeth VAUGHAN in Maenchlochog in 1821. Morris also married Mary DAVIES in 1836. 2. Elizabeth VAUGHAN, died c. 1834, was the daughter of William VAUGHAN and Mary THOMAS and was the youngest of 11 children. 3. Mary THOMAS was the daughter of Henry THOMAS and Ann ? and was the eldest of seven children. 4. James NICHOLAS (son of Morris and Elizabeth) married Mary WILLIAMS (daughter of David WILLIAMS) in Cardiff in 1848 - Mary was born in St. Dogmaels or St. Dogwells (is this a misspelling or are there two places with these names?). After Mary died James then married Ann WILLIAMS (sister, cousin?) also from St. Dogmaels or St. Dogwells. I have 1851 census onwards for James and his family in Cardiff.. Can anyone help me with any further information please? Thankyou. Jan Shaw, Melbourne, Australia.
