    1. Orielton
    2. Hi John, Thanks for the information on Orielton. It is very useful to know that the position of the place was to the south-west of Pembrokeshire as it may be an indication that the two Jenkins families are not directly connected. My understanding is that the family I am researching was never further west than Haverfordwest, and that although they moved a number of times over a period of many years it was always in an easterly direction. Thanks again, and Best Wishes, Jan

    1. Re: [WLS-PEM] Jenkins
    2. Hi Anthony, What a pleasant surprise - I wasn't expecting to get a possible contact! I am helping a friend of mine look into her family tree on the JENKINS side as she is not a computer user. I have just been talking to her on the phone to make sure that I give you correct information as it is known at the moment. Where to start?! There was a JOHN JENKINS b 1844 whose father was a LEVI JENKINS b1814 and his mother was a Margaret (nee Johns) b about 1818. Levi died in 1859 and as John was only 14 yrs of age then he went to live with his Uncle ABEDNEGO JENKINS b. about 1818/19. I am hoping to see both of them in the same household on the 1861 which is why I posted the email asking SKS to do a look-up for me. When JOHN JENKINS grew up he married and had a number of children one of whom was also named LEVI JENKINS (born about 1878), The name Orielton as a place or as a school is unkonwn to us so I can't throw any light on that, but the Biblical names you commented on I believe reflect the religious background of many families of that time as there was a strong nonconformist section of the population in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire as I understand it. So I am finding that names which seem unusual to us were actually more common at the time than I had thought. The only other information I can give which may help you decide whether or not your Jenkins family and that of my friend is the same one, is this: JOHN JENKINS had brothers ELIAS JENKINS b about 1839, MORGAN JENKINS b. about 1847, and GAD JENKINS b. about 1849. I hope this helps and I will be looking forward to hearing from you again. Best Wishes, Jan PS If anyone else reading this can add to our knowledge of this family, especially on the 1861 census, I would be really pleased if you would contact me. Thanks in advance, Jan

    1. Jenkins
    2. Hi to all, With the help of list members I now have some details of ABEDNEGO JENKINS b. about 1818/19 St Clears, PEM. He was a Calvinistic Methodist Minister in Carmarthenshire and I have him on the 1871 Census in Glam and also the 1881 Census in Carmarthenshire. I am hoping now that someone who has access to the 1861 census would be kind enough to look up ABEDNEGO JENKINS again (although I'm not sure if he was in PEM or CMN at the time, sorry!) as I am now trying to find a JOHN JENKINS who was related to Abednego in some way and went to live with him and his family when he was 14 years old in 1858. John was born in April 1844 and would have been 17 yrs old by the time of the 1861 and may still be living in the household of Abednego who would have been 42 at the time of the 1861 census. Hoping someone may be able to find them, thanks in advance, Jan

    3. Dear Jocelyn, I can't thank you enough for all the information you have sent me. It will take some time to sift through it all. I have gone ahead and ordered John Brinn's birth certificate to see if there is a father named. I did it through the Free BMD and it was so easy. Unfortunately it gets to be quite expensive for us over the pond. I also bought some units at 1837 Online and found the death for Amelia and Lydia Brinn in the September quarter of 1860, Pembroke, 11a Page 337. It must have been difficult for twins to survive. All the information on the Griffiths family is fascinating and I just wish I could win a lottery and obtain all the necessary documents to put this family all together. Once again, Jocelyn thanks for all your help. Regards, Libby

    3. Dear Tony, I wonder, even though James Skyrme, wasn't born until about 1842, if perhaps his parents might have been the John SKYRM, Labourer, and Mary Griffiths who married at Penally 01/10/1835.....interestingly, another John SKYRM, Labourer married Phebe James of St. Mary's, Tenby, at Penally on 18/07/1835. I don't have the marriage records from 1837 to 1842. Unfortunately the Castlemartin Hundred (of which Penally is part) pre-1813 marriages index is divided into male and female sections...others may have the brides' names, I don't. However, James Skyrme married in 1809, a John Skyrme married in 1802 and William Skyrme in 1798.....all at Manorbier. Another Lister may have the required information, otherwise Haverfordwest Records Office could look up and provide parish register entry copies. 3. Dear Henry, Possibilities in Rhos Hundred include: John Lawrence 1787 married Elizabeth Cale at Burton William Lawrence 1784 married Elizabeth Williams at Camrose William Lawrence 1792 married Elizabeth Rees at Robeston West. I also note that an Essex LAURENCE married Martha Page at Haverfordwest St. Martin in 1751....which may be of interest, because of the child named Essex. It may, of course, only be coincidental as Essex became a very common first name in Pembrokeshire. I looked at the Wills index but unfortunately Essex Laurence does not appear to have made a will.......however the record of wills does not show administrations. 3. Heartfelt thanks to Gareth, our List-Admin ! Via Gareth's prompt response to me yesterday (sent within 70 mins of my making my search posting, even on a Sunday), I was pointed to a [free!] internet web site archival site at URL http://www.archive.org/ which indeed does contain several "snapshots" taken until mid-2003 of the Clive Pinch material that previously had just been hinted at in other references I had found. This archive site was previously unknown to me and I will have to see how it works; it could be useful for many purposes, I just wonder how large it is and what is funding its continued existence. Not only does this archive of the material that I had been seeking reveal many, many of the pages of Clive Pinch's tree and associated comments, as well mirroring the original site organisation, it also includes a 24 KB GEDCOM file that he had made available for downloading, containing many of the SKYRM(E) names in which I am interested, and validating (for what it is worth .... :-) ) most of what I had already had established. This takes us back now to a John SKYRME (born 1749, died 1845 in Manorbier, and who married an Elizabeth MAURICE in October 1774). How to set about peeling away that particular onion, I wonder? In the Village of Carew is Robert Brinn, a widowed Stone Quarrier.....his age might end in a 3....unfortunately there is a big black cross right over the entry, particularly the first figure. He was born at St. Florence. Living with him is Anne his 25 years old Unmarried Boot Binder daughter and his 4 years old granddaughter Margaret. I guess there is always the possibility that Margaret is the daughter of Robert's unknown son, unless you are sure that Anne is her mother. 3. Hi Joy, What a plethora of information you have given me. I can't thank you enough. It will take me some time to sift through it all and see how it all fits. I did find on the BMD index that there was a Lydia and and Amelia both born June quater 1860. You make reference to these 2 children, however you have given the date of baptism for Amelia as 11 June 1870. Is this a typo. It would appear these were twins born to Anne and as you suspect they may have died soon after their baptism. In order to determine this I will have to send for their certificates. Again, thanks for all this information. Such a helpful list. I have extracted the following from the IGI all baptised at Carew 19 Apr 1857 Margaret Parent Anne Brinn 11 Jun 1860 Lydia " " 1 May 1864 John " " 11 Jun 1870 Amelia " " Only by checking the actual entries in the parish register will you establish whether she was shown as a 'single woman'. Pembrokeshire Record Office - Archives@pembrokeshire.gov.uk Neither Lydia or Amelia appear with Anne on any Census. They may have died shortly after their baptism or have been taken in by their respective fathers under their surnames. Once again a check of the burials register for Carew could provide the answer or you could check FreeBMD or 1837online to see if a Death Certificate was issused for them.
