Hi Listers, My g.grandfather, John Davies and his sister, Elizabeth sailed to Australia in 1865 and arrived in Sydney, NSW early 1866. John promised his parents he would keep a journal, and once he and his sister were settled, he would send the journal to his parents. I found out through a relative, the journal was given to the National Library of Wales. I wrote to the library, and, as much as I would like a copy, it will cost me 54 pounds, is written in Welsh and many pages are faded, so I have decided not to proceed with the purchase. This is where I need some more geographical help. The journal is titled "A journal of a voyage to Australia, 1865-6, by J. Davies, Blaenafon, Twrgwyn, Cardiganshire, and his sister Elizabeth Davies." Several weeks ago, (based on previous information) I posted to the list that John came from "Tyrgwyn Farm, Rhydlewis, Cardiganshire" So, here I am as usual confused to the max!! Can someone explain Blaenafon, Twrgwyn, for me. I have worked out where Twrgwyn is, but Blaenafon has me stumped. Thanks Lesley (in Sydney Australia) _________________________________________________________________ E-mail just got a whole lot better. New ninemsn Premium. The modern Ordnance Survey Explorer map (sheet 198) and the Ordnance Survey Landranger map (sheet 145) show Blaenafon to be located at grid reference SN372481, about 1ΒΌ miles to the east of Twrgwyn Farm, and near the village of Ffostrasol. You'll find the farm identified as "Blaen-afon" on the 1891 map at the Old Maps website by using the co-ordinates 237200,248100 Old Maps is at www.old-maps.co.uk/ The census shows that in 1881, Blaenafon was farmed by 50-year-old Evan Davies, his wife Esther, their children Elizabeth, David, and Mary, and two servants.
