Richard, I've sent you everything I have ready access to. The 1851 Census has *not* been produced (transcribed and index) in the same format as has the 1881 Census. Unless someone on this list (or the Dyfed list) just happens to have the microfilm for 1851 Cilcennin (and again, I would check the adjoining parish of Henfynyw), you'll have to order the film through the LDS and look through the parish page-by-page. My 'take', if you like, on your Samuel's scenario is this: Married to wife #1 (unknown) ca. 1860+/-. She died. Married #2 ca.1866, Aberystwyth (your date & place) to Elizabeth JONES. If she was a leadminer, there were a lot of mines in that area in the parishes of Llanbadarn Fawr and daughter chapelry of Ysbyty Cynfyn -- Cwmrheidol (Ystumteun), Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn Uchaf, etc. Aberystwyth would've been the nearest Supt. Registrar's Office, so that is why I suggested you write to them for a marriage certificate, and also have them search for Margaret's birth certificate. (You haven't said when/where Margaret was born.) Elizabeth died before 1881. Married #3 before 1881 census to Anne ? (former postmistress) who is shown with him in 1881 at *Llannerch* Aeron (I believe your family stories have confused this parish with Aberaeron), at a farm called Penlawr Ogley Moiddyn (or something similar, as it matches the place you said he died in 1927). The children living with them in 1881 are possibly from the 2nd wife. Obtaining the birth certificates for these children from the Supt. Registrar or finding their entries in the Llannerch Aeron BT's (they go up to 1878) should tell you quite a lot. The Llannerch Aeron BT's might show the burial of Elizabeth, as well. (An alternative scenario is the Wife #1 was Elizabeth JONES, Wife #2 possibly this Anne, followed by the Postmistress, Wife #3.) You didn't mention originally that Margaret and her mother were 'lead miners'. Does this mean Margaret was a child of Elizabeth's before she married Samuel, or that her mother was a lead miner before she married and that Margaret was a lead miner when she grew up. It makes no sense for the mother and daughter to be lead miners if they had Samuel to take care of them. There's nothing to indicate the Samuel DAVIES (b.ca.1836) shown as a lodger in Aberdare is 'your' Samuel, as there's no place of birth given, while the Samuel DAVIES (b.ca.1838) shown in Llanerch Aeron was at least born in the next parish to the one you've been told and is living at the farm 'your' Samuel DAVIES later died at. I suggest you also subscribe to the Dyfed list and post your queries there, as there are many more people with resources to offer -- who knows, someone may have the 1851 census you need.
