Richard, I presume you already have Samuel DAVIES' entry in the 1881 Census? If not, let me know and I can have a look for him. I don't know where you're located in the UK, but if there's an LDS (Mormon) Family History Centre in your area, you can easily order the microfilms of the Bishop's Transcripts for the parish of Cilcennin and search for the baptism of your Samuel DAVIES ca. 1836, as well as any marriages he might've made there, although the years 1858-1862 are missing. The BT's end in 1873. If he lived there during his earlier marriages, you might find the burial entries of his previous wives and baptisms of any earlier children he may have had. Additionally, the LDS have microfilmed the UK census returns, so you can order the film for the 1841 census for the parish of Cilcennin, and perhaps you'll also want to find him there in 1851. Armed with what you find in the 1841 census, you'll be able to check for the marriage of Samuel's parents and baptisms of any of his siblings, as well, if they were all in Cilcennin. As an alternative to the LDS FHC's, there's always the PRO at Kew and the FRC, Myddleton Place, London.
