Dear Dewi, Thank you for your speedy reply (copied below). The reason my search failed to find the entry to which you were referring is because it appears as 'N K' (not 'NK') i.e. with a space between the letters. The dwellings enumerated each side of Margaret Wood's residence were: Graigwen Gistfaen Tyfry --- N K --- Penglog Isaf Waunlloi Isaf Waunlloi Uchaf Nearly all of these properties are shown on the 1891 Ordnance Survey 1:10,560-scale map clustered around the coordinates 274845,271584. Go to the Old-Maps website at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ On the main page, select the "Co-ordinates" option in the search facility (near top left of the page). In the search field enter the co-ordinates 274845,271584 (without any spaces) and click the Search button. When the small map appears, click on the "Enlarged view" button below the map. A highly detailed large map of the area will open in a new window, centred roughly on the cluster of properties neighbouring Margaret Wood's residence. You can save the enlarged view map to your hard disc by clicking on the map with your right mouse button and selecting the "Save Picture As..." option in the menu which appears. In the centre of the cluster there is a property identified on the 1891 map as 'Ty Newydd' (New House). This property does not seem to be identified by name in the 1881 census. One could speculate that this could be the property which in 1881 was un-named and therefore described as 'N K'? Considering your other CGN List message about Margaret Wood's occupation as a laundress -- Margaret's next door neighbour was a charwoman, but most of the neighbours were lead miners. Presumably there would be plenty of work for a laundress! :o) Kind regards, John ---------------------------- John Ball, Ystalyfera, South Wales, UK E-mail: wfha@clara.co.uk Homepage: http://home.clara.net/wfha/ Welsh Family History Archive: http://home.clara.net/wfha/wales/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dewi Evans" <dewi.evans@web.de> To: "John Ball" <wfha@clara.co.uk> Sent: Monday, January 12, 2004 3:32 PM Subject: Re: [WLS-CGN] 1881 census terminology John, here it is: I got it from the LDS on-line census.
