I hadn't previously spotted this section of the vast but truly wonderful BBC site http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/ Video and audio from the BBC news archive 1950-2002 Use the menu items Years, Themes etc to see what they have for each year from 1950. I know, I know, pity it isn't 1750 --- but it is still really something to view video footage for events even 50 years ago .
