    1. [WLS-CGN] New to List: Ancestors: David DAVIES and Elizabeth EVANS
    2. Bonza Sheila
    3. Hi Listers, I am new to the list and have recently received family tree information. I hope to be able to find some connections to fill in the blanks. My ancestors were David DAVIES and his wife, Elizabeth EVANS. Apparently, David "...farmed Twygwyn Farm, it having come to him through is wife...." To begin with, I am sadly lacking in any geographical knowledge of the above area and would appreciate some guidance. The farm was passed onto one of the daughters, Achsah Louisa Davies who married Albert CROAD. The children of David and Elizabeth Davies were: John m Isabella CALDER in NSW Australia Elizabeth m Robert WILLIAMS ? China Margaret m Thomas Howell THOMAS in Wales Hannah m Christopher MURDOCH in Australia Achsah m Albert CROAD in Wales or England Anne m Thomas LLOYD in Wales Owen (twin) m Elizabeth MORGAN in Australia Ellen (twin) m James Thomas JAMES in Wales David m Elizabeth PHILLIPS Evan - no record ** I have checked the IGI for births, but it appears these are not available. Could someone please let me know where I can find BDM's in Wales. Thank you Lesley (Sydney, Australia) _________________________________________________________________ Chat via SMS. 2. John Ball
    3. Dear Lesley, Thanks for writing to me. I have copied our correspondence to the Cardiganshire List so that other list members can learn how the search for your ancestors' farm has progressed. Note that in your original e-mail you used the spelling "Twygwyn", which made no sense in Welsh. You are now using the spelling "Twrgwyn" which *does* make sense (Twrgwyn = white tower). Your reference to Rhydlewis has enabled me to locate the farm you were looking for. It's marked as Twrgwyn on my modern Ordnance Survey Explorer map (sheet 198) at grid reference SN350479 which places it about 600 metres north northeast of the village of Rhydlewis. You can study this area on the smaller scale Ordnance Survey 'Landranger' map (sheet 145) although Twrgwyn Farm is not identified on it my name. You can see the relevant section of the Landranger map at the Streetmaps website www.streetmap.co.uk/ In the search section near the top of the Streetmaps homepage, select the 'Landranger' option and enter SN350479 into the search field. Click the Search button and when the initial streetmap format map appears, change to the more useful Landranger map format by clicking once on the [-] 'zoom out' button at bottom right of the map. Twrgwyn is not identified by name but is the small block immediately left of the tip of the small orange arrow near the centre of the map. A far more detailed map of the area can be obtained by visiting the Ordnance Survey Old Maps website at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ The 1:10,560-scale map, published in 1891, shows Twrgwyn and the surrounding area. On the website's main page select the "Co-ordinates" option in the search facility (near top left of the page). In the search field enter the co-ordinates 235000,247900 (without any spaces) and click the Search button. When the small map appears, click on the "Enlarged view" button below the map. A highly detailed large map of the area will open in a new window, centred roughly on "Twr-gwyn" farm. You can save this map to your hard disc by clicking on it with your right mouse button and selecting the "Save Picture As..." option in the menu which appears. I realise it will not be easy tracking the surnames Davies and Evans :-( In the documents I received from a relative, there was a letter enclosed dated, September 1953 written about the ancestors (from a descendant). The author of the letter wrote "... Tyrgwyn Farm, Rhyddlewis, Cardiganshire..." I have already established Rhydlewis was spelt incorrectly, so was not surprised when I read about the word "Tyrgwyn". I will begin expanding my research by checking through the 1881 UK census, then I will check the 1891 census. Once I have narrowed down the 'family' I will then search for more detailed records, based on your suggestions. I believe the children of David and Elizabeth Davies were born in the mid 1840's onward, as my g.grandfather, John Davies (based on his age at death) was born about 1846 and he was the first born child. Thank you once again for your assistance. Kindest regards Lesley _________________________________________________________________ Chat via SMS. Simply send 'CHAT' to 1889918. Could someone please let me know where I can find BDM's in Wales. ============== Dear Lesley, Welcome to the Cardiganshire List. The spelling "Twygwyn" is corrupted. The farm name is likely to be Ty Gwyn (= white house) or possibly Twyn Gwyn (white hillock). As you've posted your message on the Cardiganshire List I assume you believe that Ty Gwyn Farm is in the county of Cardiganshire. Unfortunately, Ty Gwyn is a very common name for a farm -- for example, analysis of the 1881 census suggests there could be up to 30 properties named Ty Gwyn (or Tygwyn) in Cardiganshire. You therefore need to narrow down your search by finding out the name of the parish in which your ancestors farmed, perhaps by investigating 19th century census entries, or if your period of interest predates the censuses, possibly wills, property deeds, or other documents kept in the family. The IGI contains very few births because its information comes largely from church registers which record details of baptisms rather than births. Furthermore, the IGI has rather incomplete coverage of Welsh records. The General Register Office (GRO) index of births is a nationwide index of the civil registration records of births, from July 1837 onwards. Unfortunately, as you have not indicated the time period in which you are interested, I do not know whether the civil registration records are relevant to your research. An incomplete transcription of the GRO births (and marriages and deaths) index can be searched on-line at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ On payment of a fee, you can view facsimile images of the GRO indexes at http://www.1837online.com/ And you can view microfilmed facsimile images of the GRO indexes at many major British city and town libraries, at British County Record Offices, and worldwide at the Family History Centres attached to branches of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormon Church). Your problem in using the GRO indexes is that your family names (Davies and Evans) are two of the most common in Wales. There will therefore be many entries for the same names, making it difficult to identify which (if any) is yours. 3. Hi there Could I ask for some help in locating the above in any of the Census' prior to the 1881 please. The above is a house/farm/hamlet in/near Lampeter. My great grandmother was living there in 1851, but with whom? - children etc. I have letters (in Welsh) from her to another relation and would like to rule out some possibilities. Strangely enough there is another Undergrove near Llanybuther, seems odd to have two such English sounding places near to each other in Cardiganshire. Many thanks Jenny A
