    1. [WLS-CGN] Totally stumped!
    2. Bonza Sheila
    3. Hi Listers, Before I start on my saga, I would like to take the opportunity to publicly thank John Ball for guiding me through the geographical "haze" of Cardigan, specifically the Rhydlewis and Twrgwyn area. Now for my headache! I have been able to find my gg grandmother, Elizabeth Davies alive and a widow in the 1891 census. She was still on the property, "Twrgwyn" . In the 1891 census, the farm was now being managed by her son-in-law, James T James. When I started looking in the 1881 census, I found I was unable to be 100% certain if Elizabeth and her husband David Davies were in the area. I guess in my naivety, I thought the dwelling in the 1881 census would show as "Twrgwyn", but for the life of me, I cannot find it. I know this couple had a farm, as in a journal written by my g grandfather (John Davies their son) between 1865-1866, he wrote "...Let me know all the news of what is happening at home and what prices the cattle are fetching and also how the crops are shaping..." The journal which was translated by a descendant also includes..."John Davies returned once to Wales in the 1880's, and met his father and mother once again, for the last time..." The latter, leads me the think if John did visit his parents in the 1880's then it would be highly likely both were alive in the 1881 census. The only couple I can find that may be David and Elizabeth Davies in the 1881 census live in a dwelling "Pencwm" in the census district Llanarth. Yet this does not match the census in 1891... dwelling "Twrgwyn" district "Troedyraur" I am lost and confused.......is there anyone who may be able to guide me on the right path??? Thanks Lesley (Sydney, Australia) _________________________________________________________________ Hot chart ringtones and polyphonics. Go to http://ninemsn.com.au/mobilemania/default.asp

The only James JAMES in Troedyraur at the time of the 1881 census was just nine years old. The 1881 census shows that Twrgwyn, Troedyraur was occupied by 48-year-old James GRIFFITHS and his family, James was born in Llangranog, CGN and is said to be farming 23 acres. His wife Elizabeth was 38 and from Penbryn, CGN. From the ages and birthplaces of their children, it appears the GRIFFITHS family moved from Llandysiliogogo to Troedyraur about 1875/76. The Twrgwyn entry is extracted from FHL Film 1342308 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 5433 Folio 60 Page 15. However, the 1881 census includes two other properties called Twrgwyn in Cardiganshire. One of is in Llandysiliogogo. This Twrgwyn is a 145-acre farm occupied by 56-year-old John DAVIES and his family. John was from Llandysilio, CGN and his wife Mary was from Llangranog, CGN. Source: FHL Film 1342310 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 5441 Folio 31 Page 2 The other Cardiganshire Twrgwyn listed in the 1881 census is a 35-acre farm in Nantcwnlle and was occupied by 28-year old John OWEN and his family. John was from Llanilar, CGN and his wife Anne was from Llanbadarn Trefeglwys, CGN. Source: FHL Film 1342312 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 5451 Folio 96 Page 11 There are several widows named Elizabeth Davies living in Troedyraur at the time of the 1881 census. As you haven't quoted her year of birth, I cannot suggest which of them (if any) could be yours. 1. [WLS-CGN] Daniel Davies (Deceased) Past Bishop of Bangor
    2. Fred Owen
    3. I am trying to verify a family story and establish more ancestry information on Daniel Davies thought born Nov 7 1862 in Tregargon Cardigan Wales ?. The family is said to have come from Llannddewibrefi area. Daniel Davies went on to become a vicar in Wrexham, Red Canon of Wales and Bishop of Bangor before he died. Parents may have been Evan Davies and Mary Lloyd. Another legend is that Emily Davies, a force in the founding of Girton College Cambridge, is a distant relative. As Emily was born in 1830, daughter of John Davies and Mary Hopkinson the Emily connection must go back to Daniels father or more probably Grandfather or great grandfather. Is anyone else working on this Davies family, if so can they or anyone else help in establishing the link. Or provide more information on Daniel Davies family and ancestors. Regards and thanks for any suggestions Fred Owen Gig Harbor

I'm starting with CGN, the first complete one is for Aberporth, can be seen on http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CGN/Aber-porth/Kellys1910.html If anyone who has the Cd, or would buy it, wishes to take part in this challenging project then please contact me direct. 1. Re: [WLS-CGN] Emily Davies - Aberystwyth
    2. Julie Preston
    3. Dewi, There are a few Emily Davies in the 1881 Census that were born 1880 and earlier and living in the surrounding communities to Aberystwyth. Saying that, however, it would be a shot in the dark to fix on any one of them, especially with no date of birth. Have you obtained the marriage certificate for Emily and John Williams, which would provide her father's name and occupation? Also, the 1880-1890 time period is rather large -- can you not get a bit closer to her birth year, possibly from her death certificate, memorial inscription or an obituary? With those details more firm, you'd have little problem sending to the Supt. Registrar's office, Aberystwyth, for a copy of her birth certificate. How do you know she came from around Aberystwyth? 2. Hi Sue, You were asking about the location of Clynglas(Clunglas) a couple of months ago - I see that David Rees of Clynglase is mentioned in one of the Morgan Richardson documents deposited at the NLW. I find these NLW schedules invaluable for tracing property links: "1090. 1790, June 9 1. Owen John of the parish of Llangoedmore, farmer, and Samuel John late of the parish of Troedyraur now of the parish of Pembryn, farmer (nephews of Thomas Richard late of Rhydybont, parish of Llanybydder, co. Carmarthen, yeoman) and David Rees of Clynglase, parish of Llanfihangel Ystrad, gent.; 2. John Evans of Nantygelly, parish of Dihewid, gent. LEASE OF POSSESSION of a messuage called Tythyn y Gwndwn parish of Kilieayron, and a messuage called Partywcha o Rhydgrech (being a moiety of Rhydgrech) parish of Llanvihangel Ystrad." Hope this helps you Bill G-J

    3. I'd like to remind listers to make full use of this latest facility on these Genuki parish pages. The links on the pages for CGN, CMN and GLA are now fully functional with the proviso that I have no intention of checking each place link in detail until my broadband connection kicks in next month. There may be the odd place which doesn't hit the spot, or is mis-placed parish wise, please do let me know about it if so. PEM is currently being worked on as far as creating more exact grid refs is concerned. Anyway, use the links to the modern maps on streetmap and multimap as you will, each has its fans. The old-maps links are perhaps most people's ideal, do remember to use the 1 - 5 zoom in/out options which may be partly hidden depending on your screen resolution. Don't forget to try out the other options of Enlarged View (which is great - but be patient), also View a Modern Map, and View Aerial Photo (which is modern naturally !). I could play with it for hours :-) Gareth List administrator for DYFED, CGN & PEM Genuki Wales http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/ Lookup Exchange http://home.clara.net/tirbach/lookup.html Help Page http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html .

    2. Is there anyone with access to the parish records for around 1814/15/16 in Newport,Pembs who would be kind enough to look for the baptism of John Morris or Ann Williams.   They were married to each other in 1837 in Newport parish church and are also on the 1871 & 1861 censuses saying born Newport Pembs with ages which give year of birth around 1815 + - a year or two. The only clue I have as to their parents names is that on the entry of marriage in the parish register is that there was a William Williams as a witness which may have been Ann's father.  The other witness is a Thomas Jenkins. As always your helpis much appreciated Thanks in advance Ann Driscoll
