    1. [WLS-CGN] Re Tangoyallt
    2. Gwyn Williams
    3. A couple of months ago I knew nothing about the family of my grgrandmother Elizabeth Williams of Tangoyallt, Llanddewi Brefi, apart from her parents names and her address. I posted a query to this list and received two replies, one from Annie in Los Angeles and another from a Liz Thomas in Weston-Super-Mare. Both had family connections to Tangoyallt and Liz turned out to be a third cousin of mine. Annie was also able to put me in touch with my father's second cousin who had very detailed info of the family, and I was able to help him with his missing links. It has now become a team effort, and the results are better than I ever could have dreamed of. And all because of the unique name of the dwelling, Tangoyallt. It shows the value of joining a mailing list such as this. Regards, Gwyn Williams (Mid-Glam)

    3. Kelly's Directory 1895 Specifically from the cd published by Archive CD Books http://www.archivecdbooks.org/ I have now uploaded the extracts for Henllan parish and Llanafan parish in CGN. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CGN/Henllan/Kellys1895.html http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CGN/Llanafan/Kellys1895.html Those of you still awake will notice that I have switched from the 1910 directory to that for 1895. This is because the latter Cd allows text selection/copy/paste with a built in OCR function which enables me to do these extracts a lot more easily. Thanks to Aidan (for pointing it out) and Rod for facilitating it (and allowing it). I'm still not currently doing the bigger parish entries, so Aberystwyth, Cardigan and Lampeter are OS in CGN to date (knock knock ) Gareth List administrator for DYFED, CGN & PEM Genuki Wales http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/ Lookup Exchange http://home.clara.net/tirbach/lookup.html Help Page http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html .

Some local associations may have designated individuals as honorary archivists. But quite a lot of records have also been transferred to county archive services. If you run a database search from the National Register of Archives site at http://www.hmc.gov.uk/nra/corporate_simple.htm and type in the word 'scout', it should indicate a significant number of examples from different parts of the UK. The word 'guide' will produce a much smaller number, but you might like to try other searches as well (although none is ever likely to provide a complete list). AJ

    1. [WLS-CGN] Scout and Guide log books
    2. The idea of posting this came out of an exchange of emails with Gareth - it's something that I've never seen mentioned in genealogical circles and whilst I don't think it will be of any use for finding missing members of a family tree, it could be a source of incidental information and give an idea of what the younger male members of the family got up to. Up until fairly recent times, it was standard practice that Scout troops kept a log or journal of everything they did week by week, which boys joined, left, or moved away, sometimes information about whether there were brothers/cousins already in Scouts, where they lived, and a variety of other odd items about the troop and the boys in it which seemed relevant to the person writing up the journal. This was usually the leader (or Scoutmaster as he was known in those days), but was sometimes one of the older boys, countersigned by the Scoutmaster. Scouting started in UK in 1907 and in many other countries in the following 20 years or so, and some groups still keep logs now, so there could be quite a lot of information around. I had a look at one of these recently for a troop local to here (Bedfordshire), and it makes fascinating reading. It runs from 1934 to 1970, covers the outbreak of war in 1939 with fire-watch drill and blackout practice, and gaps in the narrative where the troop closed because the leaders went off to war. Post-war there are problems with getting enough food ration coupons to go to camp! I've referred here to Scouts in the UK, but Girl Guides started in UK in 1910 and as they were started by Baden-Powells sister with advice from him, almost certainly Guides would have kept logs as well. Overseas, Scouting is active in about 150 countries, most of which started based on the UK model, and they may well have kept similar records. Some of these journals will have disappeared, but given the number of Scout troops across the country there must still be a good few surviving, particularly if the troop is an old-established one still using it's original name. If it has closed or merged, any records should have been passed to the local Scout District or County/Area Headquarters. Local council youth services should have contact details for HQ's, and many groups have websites with contact points. The logs I've seen record "anecdotal" information about the life of the troop and not what we nowadays would call confidential data, so I think any access problem is more likely to be one of arranging a convenient time and place to look at them with the person who currently has them. I only sub to the CGN list, so anyone who thinks this is worth posting on any other lists they sub to, please feel free to do so. Dave Davies

    1. [WLS-CGN] Something to think about ... cross posting
    2. Gareth
    3. Seems to me that these lists are SO quiet compared with a couple of years ago, you can't ALL be dead ! So, I wondered what could be done to stimulate some general interest/activity - and here is my 'grand idea' :-) A project involving creating something of historical value. Still awake ?? What I had in mind was to lay out in prose, in as much detail as possible, the day in the life of a typical resident of South Wales in the 19th century. BUT, every single piece of material must be based on historical fact - with the original source to be included in the accompanying reference notes. Now I can't think how we would ever agree on which part, geographic and occupational, of South Wales to base this on, but that isn't MY problem. I feel that I have done my bit now, and so I leave it to SOMEONE ELSE to pick this up and run with it, or not. The end product could go on Genuki as a permanent feature, I am quite happy to house the interim 'story' within my Help Pages so that people can see how it is coming along and make contributions accordingly. I'm saying no more about it, a lack of enthusiasm will no doubt see it dying a rapid death. RIP. 3. Hi Listers, My g.grandfather, John Davies and his sister, Elizabeth sailed to Australia in 1865 and arrived in Sydney, NSW early 1866. John promised his parents he would keep a journal, and once he and his sister were settled, he would send the journal to his parents. I found out through a relative, the journal was given to the National Library of Wales. I wrote to the library, and, as much as I would like a copy, it will cost me 54 pounds, is written in Welsh and many pages are faded, so I have decided not to proceed with the purchase. This is where I need some more geographical help. The journal is titled "A journal of a voyage to Australia, 1865-6, by J. Davies, Blaenafon, Twrgwyn, Cardiganshire, and his sister Elizabeth Davies." Several weeks ago, (based on previous information) I posted to the list that John came from "Tyrgwyn Farm, Rhydlewis, Cardiganshire" So, here I am as usual confused to the max!! Can someone explain Blaenafon, Twrgwyn, for me. I have worked out where Twrgwyn is, but Blaenafon has me stumped. I have worked out where Twrgwyn is, but Blaenafon has me stumped. ================ Dear Lesley, The 1881 census reveals that Blaenafon is the name of a 200-acre farm in the same Cardiganshire parish (Troedyraur) as Twrgwyn Farm. The modern Ordnance Survey Explorer map (sheet 198) and the Ordnance Survey Landranger map (sheet 145) show Blaenafon to be located at grid reference SN372481, about 1¼ miles to the east of Twrgwyn Farm, and near the village of Ffostrasol. You'll find the farm identified as "Blaen-afon" on the 1891 map at the Old Maps website by using the co-ordinates 237200,248100 Old Maps is at www.old-maps.co.uk/ The census shows that in 1881, Blaenafon was farmed by 50-year-old Evan Davies, his wife Esther, their children Elizabeth, David, and Mary, and two servants. 2. Gareth
    3. I hope CGN and PEM listers can read this on the Dyfed list See below two notices currently shown on the Rootsweb Help Desk. Aol mail to CGN and PEM listers (on Rw's List 5) are bouncing and subscribers are probably unsubscribed by now. The problem lies with Aol, please take Rw's advice on this. ############ Mail Lists: 2003-10-24 The mailing list server (LISTS2) is still processing a small backlog of email for ISPs that have busy mail servers and unable to keep up with mail delivery, eg. Tiscali.com and related domains, bigpond.com and related domains. Subscribers from these domains are recommended to check their list subscriptions as there has been numbers bouncing off mailing lists. A small number of lists are still unavailable following server maintenance. CHECKING LIST SUBSCRIPTIONS Following resolution of e-email problems, subscribers are encouraged to double-check their subscriptions to mailing lists at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ in case they have bounced off a mailing list. ------------------------- Mail Lists: 2003-10-24 Domains bouncing e-mail from RootsWeb AOL.COM has taken exception to one of our mailing lists and is bouncing email from that server. While this happens occasionally and is usually resolved quickly there is no guarantee that is the case this time. Users of aol.com service should direct their queries to the AOL HelpDesk as the matter is solely within their control. Users should also check their list subscriptions as e-mail addresses have bounced off mailing lists. See link 'Checking list subscriptions'.
