Many thanks to all who answered my request for info regarding my gr gr aunts letters, it seems that the grocers is still in Llanybyther opposite the Cross Hands Inn!! Can you please help me further, the address on the letter is simply DOLYRANE or DOLGRANE - presumably the name of a farm/house, if anyone has the 1861 Census for Llanybyther and areas within walking distance! could I ask if you can identify the house and occupants please. Very many thanks Jenny

Perhaps this is a possibility? Cross Hands is also a former mining village on the main A48 road between the towns of Swansea and Carmarthen, but this is nearly 20 miles south of Llanybydder. Jenny says the original letter was in Welsh, so maybe S.M. is an abbreviation of a Welsh language phrase? But regardless of the above, what a wonderful treasure Jenny's great-aunt's letters are. Hi all I have a letter dated January 1861 - it is actually one of five - and I am trying to make sense of the people mentioned. There would seem to be a clandestine meeting being arranged and I believe it to be between John and my grgr aunt! - Part of it is as follows, the village is Llanbyther, I would be grateful for information if anyone recognises the places mentioned. It was origianlly written in Welsh. P.S.Both of us will call at the house [shop] of David Davies, Grocer for something from the Shop as an excuse for seeing if you are there and then we will go across to the Cross Hands. So if we should not meet at D.Davies' you could come brazenly[underlined] to Cross Hands and ask for us. I shall now close this time hoping fervently that I shall see you this coming Saturday - this briefly from your friend and sweetheart. Best Wishes John Davies (S.M.)" Many thanks Jenny A

Hi Noel I seem to remember responding to a similar query from some time back. Since I live in Goginan,I can confirm that you need the Melindwr district for census purposes. The village fell within the parish of Llanbadarn Fawr. I say fell because St David's Church in Capel Bangor, our neighbouring village, only dates back to 1847. You need, of course, to be aware that any baptism might well have been in one of several non-conformist churches or chapels. I should have thought that the best bet would be to obtain the birth certificate from the address I gave previously - ie Cardiganshire North Registration District Swyddfar Sir Marine Terrace Aberystwyth Dyfed SY23 2DE Tel +44 (0)1970 633580 You could, of course, confirm the Quarter and year of his birth registration by checking the indexes. I notice that in 1881 John KERBY was living in Wingate, Durham and was a coal miner. As I've mentioned before there was an important silver/lead mine in our village in the 19th century so that would explain the mining connection. If you would like further assistance as to the local records you are welcome to contact me. Recent list exchanges on one of these lists suggest that it might be timely for me as list administrator to ask listers to continue to treat each other kindly in list exchanges. I have no wish to stifle constructive debate, and by all means feel free to disagree with each other - but preferably without introducing an element of personal criticism, implied or otherwise. In general limit yourselves to one bite of the cherry each on list, after that please do it off list if you really feel that strongly. Bear in mind that I also read list messages (although not necessarily in your time zone) and will take any action I feel appropriate, on or off list. As a further reminder, personal opinions on religious or political matters are taboo. At present it would be as well to include the British Royal family in that I think. GENUKI: The UK & Ireland Genealogical Information Service Some 5 years ago, I am on record as suggesting onlist that Genuki was something of a maze to navigate --- needing a route map on my Help Page, which didn't please the local Genuki maintainer at the time ! But since then, poacher turned gamekeeper, I have got heavily involved in Genuki myself. It was therefore a sort of natural justice when someone this week politely suggested much the same thing about Genuki to me :-) So, a simple tour of Genuki Wales then. Think of it as pyramid shape, the main Wales page on top. | >From the Wales page, link below my name, there are downward links to a set of pages for each Welsh county. | | | Each county has a main page, and if you click on the Towns & Parishes link at the top of each one you will go to a list of the parishes in that county, each parish name being a direct link to that parish page. | | | | | The parish page is the main building block, on there you'll find data in a standard format, with links to other sites of interest. But Wales is only one part of Genuki [the most important of course], go up one level from the Wales page and you can go back down similar pyramids for the other areas of the UK & I. And also from there are links to a wealth of general genealogy data pages. You may sometimes feel 'lost in the wilderness' after clicking link after link, but if you have the Genuki Wales page prominent in your browser's Favourites list you will always have a quick route home !
