Am researching the John BRODIE family of Aberystwyth. What I have thus far is as follows: John BRODIE (born in Dunbar, Scotland on 22 Feb 1793) came to Aberystwyth between 1821 and 1823/4, after military service. He was a shoemaker by trade and moved to Aberystwyth with his wife, Hannah (possibly also listed as Anna) and two children, James and Elizabeth. In later years, there is mention of the birth of additional children, Richard, William John and Ann BRODIE. William is listed, in the 1861 census, as being born in Llanbadarn in 1823/24 with the others listed as being born in Aberystwyth. It seems that John BRODIE was married three times: the first Hannah BRODIE (mother of his children) is buried in Aberystwyth, age 40, in November, 1830. His second wife, also Hannah BRODIE was buried April 1841, age 53. After this, John moved to Manchester and remarried, where he died in 1844. My first query would be concerning the parish registers for Aberystwyth/Llanbadarn and any mention of the BRODIE family therein. Any assistance from fellow listers would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Diane Hungate
Hello Everyone... Just sending my interests for the Cardiganshire area. JAMES and JENKINS.. simply that i'm afraid... Thought I'd repost my one Cardiganshire interest in case anyone out there is also working on this family. Thomas Benjamin JONES (wouldn't you know it) Supposedly born July 11, 1821 Father Benjamin (iron weigher/from marriage certificate) 1851 census says that Thomas was born in Llandyfriog, CARD, but my visit to the NLW turned up a few missing years in the Bishop's Transcripts for Llandyfriog (including 1821) so I couldn't verify this. 1841 - he was working as an iron roller and living in Bedwellty MON (household of Morgan MORGANS). 1842 - he married Ann MORGAN (born Merthyr Tydfi) at "Sharon Chapel, Parish of Bedwellty" MON 1851 - he was living at Maesteg GLA with Ann and children 1857-1859 - he, Ann and children emigrated to the US Darla The Woodlands, TX
I've just completed the process of checking each link in the Genuki place name databases for each of my counties. Not as bad as it sounds with broadband. You may be interested in seeing how many separate places are included for each county, there are lots of alternative spellings in there but gives an idea of relative size. CGN 408 CMN 521 PEM 572 GLA 901 I found so few errors, mostly my own, that I have to repeat my thanks to those guys who helped me compile the more accurate 6 figure grid references recently. You did good ! Some more advice on using the links on each parish page. Use the streetmap links for preference, the default first view has more detail on. If the named place isn't shown as such on there, look at the old-maps page, should be named there. Don't forget the enlarged view option on old-maps, most of these 'controls' are hidden below the horizon on my screen. If you use the multimap links, to get more detail click on the 25,000 option, the 50,000 isn't very useful. Also don't forget the bigger map option button on top right. I hadn't previously spotted this section of the vast but truly wonderful BBC site http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/ Video and audio from the BBC news archive 1950-2002 Use the menu items Years, Themes etc to see what they have for each year from 1950. I know, I know, pity it isn't 1750 --- but it is still really something to view video footage for events even 50 years ago . I can't resist pointing out to Uk listers that Genuki has a full two page coverage in the current issue (55) of the magazine 'Internet Made Easy'. The intro starts out; "Find thousands of genealogy resources ---This brilliant site is a must-click for any genealogist........." I can't argue with that now can I ?? :-) Quite amusing to see that the example search shown in the article has 'Dyfed Family History Society Alumni Oxoniensis' sitting at the top of the search results for the search expression 'birth records crawley' ! Which gives me the lead-in to remind all listers that the main Genuki search engine reached via the Contents button at the top of each Genuki page searches a database, which apart from Genuki's own pages, also includes the PRO, SoG and FFHS web sites --- also all the Family History Society and County Surname Interest List sites linked from Genuki. Jenkin Davies emigrated from Cilcennin parish to Pennsylvania with his father Jenkin David well before 1715. The earlier Jenkin DAVID is thought to have been born c 1654 and Jenkin DAVIES c 1675. When the latter died he left this farm in Cilcennin parish to his brother Evan with many stipulations re descent within the family line. I have heard that a descendent, Anne Davies, lived there until 1957 and that the farm had, by her grandfather, been split into three parts: Esgair-wen, Blaen-yr-esgair, and Blaen-waun. I would like to learn how much of the above is true and exact dates if possible. Does anyone know this area and its people well? I will appreciate any information and/or clues to sources. Anna --- Anna Brown
