    1. [WLS-CGN] 1861 census Mwnt area, DAVIES/DAVIS
    2. Would someone please be kind enough to look on the 1861 census inthe Mwnt area for a family of DAVIES/DAVIS to include a Sarah aged about 12-13? She is on the 1881 census in Verwick, born Mwnt, aged 32, with her children all born in the Verwick/LLangoedmore area. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks Ann

    1. [WLS-CGN] 1871 Census
    2. In answer to Ann Driscoll's question about how to find a film on the 1871 census at her local FHC: Your library should have the Alphabethical Index to the 1841-1891 Censuses for England, Wales, Isle of Man and Channel Islands. IT is fiche #6024509 and there are 5 of them. They list the place, parish/township, county and under each year, they list the film #. The 1871 census is not indexed. If you have looking for a small town, it should not be a problem - just look line by line. Hope I have helped someone. Annie

    1. Re: [WLS-CGN] marriage look up WILLIAMS & DAVIS/DAVIES
    2. Julie Preston
    3. Ann, Have you considered they may very well have married within a few *months* of the birth of their first child (i.e., 1867)? When you say you've "tried all the usual web sites", have you tried www.1837online.com ? Alternatively, have you sent to the Supt. Registrar's office covering that area and requested a marriage certificate? Something else to consider -- it wasn't uncommon, by that time, for couples to marry in the Registrar's office, rather than in the parish church or chapel. It would probably help, when ordering a certificate, if you know where Sarah's family lived in 1861 and 1871. Presume you've located them in the census returns? 1. Re: [WLS-CGN] Marriage of John Williams and Sarah Jones
    2. Julie Preston
    3. Margaret, If James was their eldest child, that would put Sarah's age at 29 when he was born -- somehow, I doubt he was the eldest and suspect they were married long before 1832, probably in Llanbadarn Fawr Parish Church as that's where Sarah was from and where James was born. The 1813-37 Dyfed Marriage Index shows quite a few marriages in LBF of John WILLIAMS -- the index doesn't 'match' grooms to brides, but I looked for common years for Sarah JONES, as well. Only by checking the LDS film of the Bishop's Transcripts will you be able to determine if any of these marriages are the right one. I would also suggest looking for earlier children (prior to 1832) baptised there. 1815 (2 John Williams, 1 Sarah Jones) 1816 ( same as above) 1819 (all above probably too early if Sarah was born ca.1803) 1828 - more likely, if Sarah was a JONES. If Sarah *wasn't* a JONES, here are other marriages of John WILLIAMS in LBF in the same time-period: 1820 1822 1823 1826 No 1832 marriage of a John WILLIAMS anywhere in the area of LBF. 2. In a message dated 12/6/03 6:47:50 AM Pacific Standard Time, WLS-CARDIGANSHIRE-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: Your Family History Center should have a copy of a bunch of fiche which is listed as an Alphabethical List of the 1841 thru 1891 Censuses for England and Wales. It shows the name of the town or parish with the film numbers for each census year 1841-1891. I believe that most if not all of the FHC's within the USA has a copy of these fiche. It will be listed within the Family History Library Catalog with the fiche numbers. The person who said that you had to find that information yourself, doesn't know the Catalog or the library very well. If your library does not have a copy, you can order the fiche in for a small amount of money. I have the fiche numbers written down and when I find it I will post them to this list. When [he] died he left his farm in Cilcennin Parish to his brother Evan DAVIES with many stipulations re descent within the family line. I have heard that a descendent of Evan DAVIES, Anne DAVIES, lived there until 1957 and that the farm had been divided, by her grandfather, into three parts: Esgair-wen, Blaen-yr-esgair, and Blaen-waun. =============== Dear Anna, According to the 1881 census on CD (transcribed by the LDS church): 1. Blaenwaun existed as an 18-acre farm in Cilcennin in 1881. It was then occupied by a REES family. 2. Blaen-yr-esgair (then spelt 'Blaenesger') existed as a 40-acre farm in Cilcennin in 1881. It was then occupied by a MORGANS family. 3. Esgair-wen (then spelt 'Esgerwen') existed as a 26-acre farm in Cilcennin in 1881. It was then occupied by a MORGAN family. You might try the above spellings when following Julie Preston's advice to search the ISYS:web (Minor Databases) on the NLW website. The three farms are also shown separately (as 'Blaen-waun', 'Esgair-wen', and 'Blaen-yr-esgair') both on the 1:10,560-scale Ordnance Survey map published in 1890/91 (on the Old Maps website at www.old-maps.co.uk/), and on the modern 1:25,000-scale Ordnance Survey Explorer map (sheet 199). This evidence suggests that if your story is true, the original farm must have been broken up before 1881 and the resulting farms were no longer occupied by a DAVIES family. 3. Anna, The National Library of Wales online database ISYS:web (Minor Databases) might be a good place for you to find mentions of your place-names in Cilcennin. While inputting search criteria, use the "Sounds Like" option and check every possibility (be creative with spellings and also use the "within a paragraph of) option to include Cardigan or Cilcennin (again, be creative with the spelling of Cilcennin, especially in very old documents). Many old deeds for Cardiganshire are summarized in the databases. http://www.llgc.org.uk Once there, click on (right side of screen in English) "Catalogues and Electronic Resources". On the next page, scroll down (left side of page under "Available to All") to the section for ISYS:web (Minor Databases). Click on "Search the database". Good luck! 3. Jenkin DAVIES emigrated from Cilcennin Parish to Pennsylvania with his brothers and (his father?)Jenkin DAVID well before 1715. The earlier Jenkin DAVID is thought to have been born about 1654 and the younger Jenkin DAVIS about 1675. When the latter died he left his farm in Cilcennin Parish to his brother Evan DAVIES with many stipulations re descent within the family line. I have heard that a descendent of Evan DAVIES, Anne DAVIES, lived there until 1957 and that the farm had been divided, by her grandfather, into three parts: Esgair-wen, Blaen-yr-esgair, and Blaen-waun. I would like to learn how much of the above is true plus exact dates - if possible. Does anyone know this area and its people well? I will appreciate any information and/or clues to sources --- Anna Brown
