Joyce, Further to my previous reply, I decided to take a look for any RUSSELL's living in Cardiganshire in the 1881 Census Index. There were only 3 people with that surname, all living in Aberystwyth. I strongly suspect your "Abavardi" is, indeed, Aberystwyth. Perhaps these entries might give you some clues, even though Catherine and, presumably, her parents, had emigrated before 1881. You could search for Catherine's birth certificate in the GRO Indexes for the 4 quarters of 1852 or, alternatively, write to the Supt. Registrar's Office, Aberystwyth (see details/address on GENUKI pages under Civil Registration) and you won't need the GRO index number, in that case. Joyce, There is no parish of "Abarvardi" in Cardiganshire (or anywhere in Wales). Perhaps a clarification of the source(s) you're referencing and the entire text in context might help to figure out the correct parish. Jerry, Unfortunately, there's no published index to births for that time. If you suspect he was born in the parish of Llandysul (there's also a Llandysul/Llandyssil in Montgomeryshire, by the way), it would appear you'll have trouble locating a baptism in either the original parish register (baptisms begin 1798 -- earlier registers apparently lost) or in the Bishop's Transcripts (filmed by the LDS/Mormons). Perhaps wills (St. David's Diocese), Land Tax Assessments (ca. 1798), etc., might be avenues you could try. Regards, Julie Preston [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerald E. Has anyone came across a Joseph Strange in their research? Can anyone tell me if the name BOWDEN is a valid Welsh surname? Joseph Bowden was born in Wales and settled in Minersville PA. I wonder if there was a slight change in his surname when he imigrated. I know of Bowen and Bowdren but can't find anything on Bowden.
Could you look up to see if a David Thomas was born in 1761 in Llandyssil Parish, Cardiganshire or if he was not born in that parish, if he was born in Cardiganshire. I am interested in his parents names and also a brother (unnamed) born to his parents. Thank you for any help. Jerry Thomas

Hi Everyone, I am new to this list and have a question for you all. Was the beach at Aberystwyth called Beach Southern in the mid 1920's? I have a photo of my grandparents on "Beach Southern" and am trying to find where it is? I also have postcards of Aberystwyth dated 1946 showing the beach and promenade which prompts me to ask this question. Hoping to hear from you. Judy in Mooroopna, Australia.
I'm looking for someone about whom a contact on the Dyfed list has told me. He has undertaken research into the FELIX name in 18th and 19th century Cardiganshire, perhaps the area of Lledrod/ Llanilar/Llanddewi Brefi. Some of the family emigrated to Waukesha County, Wisconsin, in the 18th century. Many thanks. Has anyone got any information linking Sir Davey Gam to the Gambolds of Pembroke? Also we have got as far back with our family tree to 1638 with the marriage of William Gambold to Maria ?? William Gambold was born in Cilgerran circa 1615 & buried 19th July 1670 in Cardigan. Are there any relatives with any information for us? Thank you Janet & David Whiteley, Bridgend

Hi Everyone, Dyfed and Cardiganshire Listers may be interested to know I've just uploaded a new "Images of Wales" feature onto my website, depicting "Dolcoed", a 300-year-old former woollen mill at Bontnewydd in the parish of Blaenpennal near Tregaron, Cardiganshire. Select "Images of Wales" from the "Short Cuts" link at the top of my WFHA homepage at the URL below. John, In response to your question, I'm also posting this to all of the mailing lists I'm subscribed to as there are probably many new subscribers who aren't aware of this: For anyone researching in Wales, the one book I consider to be a "must have" is "Welsh Family History, A Guide to Research", ed. by John & Sheila Rowlands, 2nd edition1998, pub. by the Federation of Family History Societies Publications Ltd. and the authors, ISBN 1 86006 065 X. This edition (and other genealogical research books/guides) can now be purchased online from the Society of Genealogists, London -- website: http://www.sog.org.uk/acatalog/welcome.html --- under British Research/Wales/Genealogical Guides from the online catalog page. For those of us who live outside the UK, this online purchasing method is extremely convenient! *PLEASE*, *PLEASE*, purchase (and read!) this book, as it will answer many of the basic questions posed to the lists (and directly to lookup exchange volunteers) by new researchers who are unfamiliar with the types of records available. It also addresses those records that go beyond the obvious parish registers, Bishops' Transcripts, and Census Returns, and which are often overlooked by many researchers. In addition, purchasing Ordnance Survey maps of the areas you're researching is also essential, and will clear up many frustrations encountered due to your unfamiliarity with the locale. Hi Julie Every researcher in Wales should make at least one visit in their life time to the NLW, if only to know what they are missing ! Check out the NLW's entry on the Archives section of my Help Page, has directions on finding your way round the place. Can't help with accommodation but I'm sure you will be able to deal with the odd riotous, or even rioting, student :-) Oh, perhaps the Cambrian News site will have some accommodation links; http://www.aberystwyth-today.co.uk/index2.cfm Gareth List Administrator for Dyfed, CGN & PEM.
