    3. Hi Calista, Beili, often seen alone as a place name, means: yard or enclosure (often formed by a wall or hedge, as in castle). Ffoes or Ffôs means: ditch or trench, usually man made. For obvious reasons the two, very often go together. I hope this helps. And yes, get yourself a copy of 'Y Geiriadur Mawr' Gomer Press. ISBN No. 0-7154-0543-8 Hwyl (you can look that up in your new Geiriadur!) Steve.

    3. Could someone please tell me the meaning of this place name? Would a Welsh-English dictionary help me in the future? I'm assuming this is a small place in the area of Llangoedmor, although so far I've not found it on the map sites. Appreciate all the help I've had. We've sent for the parish records from LHS, so we'll see what else turns up. Calista

    3. Dear Fellow Listers Can anyone help me with information regarding the village of Llanilar in Cardiganshire. I am looking for the names of the shopkeepers in the village, possibly grocers, bakers or post office, in the name of Parry between the 1880 - 1920 timeframe. I am specifically looking for a Margaret or Mary Parry. If anyone has access to such lists of this area, I would appreciate if the could look for the Parry name on my behalf. 3. As a last word on this I think I'd better say thet Lyn's real enough problem with long message tails is probably one that most of us don't quite understand. I believe this is because Lyn is with Aol who do everything their own way [ as I remember from my own Aol days anyway] and the digest is presented as one long message ,with divisions but requiring one to scroll through each one "in its entirety" just to reach the next one. Not like with Outlook Express which presents each message as a separate clickable item from a menu. So, yes, we might all try just a bit harder to trim the surplus baggage from replies, without removing what is necessary for the response to make sense of course. I'm glad we've sorted that one out ! 3. Adrianne, Welcome to the list. Suggest you also subscribe to the longer-established Dyfed list as many subscribers there have overlapping interests in the counties of Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. A good place to begin would be to check out the links provided to you in the "Welcome" message you received from the listowner, Gareth Hicks, when you subscribed to this list. If you thoroughly explore the links from those pages, you'll get a good idea of the many resources available. For anyone researching in Wales, the one book I consider to be a "must have" is "Welsh Family History, A Guide to Research", ed. by John & Sheila Rowlands, 2nd edition1998, pub. by the Federation of Family History Societies Publications Ltd. and the authors, ISBN 1 86006 065 X. You can now purchase this book in the U.S. from Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD -- website www.genealogybookshop.com You said your Griffith JOHN "lived in the area" but no specifics. Do you have any references to a house name, village or parish in Cardiganshire? What source material do you have referring to Cardiganshire as his origin? 3. Hi Listers, I don't very often post messages on this list (I prefer to make my contributions elsewhere) but on this occasion I feel compelled to add my two pennyworth. I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiments expressed in Lyn's final paragraph (Lyn at [email protected] ) ------------------ PLEASE know I recognize what real jewels you and Julie are with your selfless devotion to the site and to Welsh research in general. Thanks very much for the speedy and thoughtful answers in the midst of busy lives! ------------------ I thinks it's rather churlish of anyone to complain because Julie Preston and Gareth Hicks include unedited original messages at the bottom of their responses. As these old messages are at the bottom, there is no need for us to scroll through them. We can simply read Julie's and Gareth's contributions and then either ignore or scan quickly through what follows according to our personal preferences. Because of time constraints, these two busy people have to make a choice: EITHER they provide listers with six or more well-considered helpful responses per day, and include possibly lengthy original text at the bottom; OR they provide only two or three helpful responses, but spend time tidying up the addenda at the bottom of their messages. (.... or even worse, they cease contributing to this list and concentrate on the several others to which they are subscribed). I know which choice I would want them to make... and it would NOT be numbers two or three! :o) I think we should all consider ourselves extremely fortunate that we have people such as Julie and Gareth who are willing to spend so much of their time helping us make progress with our family history research. It must be rather soul-destroying for them to feel their efforts are not properly appreciated. Yes, I DID complain once before--I think only the once. Can I be the only one who finds this irritating and time-consuming? Do people get ONLY the email from your site? Then a number of separate letters would be fun. I get, after pruning back, 4 such sites, some with 26 entries. Let's just say 10 for average, though. So 40 pieces of mail, plus the 20 or so per day from friends, etc., if I switch to the L rather than D mode. And, I think you said, your server makes deleting the letter to which you are replying difficult...Julie seems to say that in her reply. That isn't that hard for me, so it's difficult for me to understand the problem. On other sites, people seem to respond by saying "Dear Chauncy, about the census problem...", and go on from there. Long signature lines, after many spaces, followed by self-advertising (not the unavoidable Juno-type stuff) also contributes to the length for D subscribers. PLEASE know I recognize what real jewels you and Julie are with your selfless devotion to the site and to Welsh research in general. 3. Lyn, Guilty as charged. It appears this must be a pet peeve of yours. I confess that after attempting to formulate cohesive, informative replies to perhaps a dozen people per day (on and off this list plus Dyfed, Powys and Montgomeryshire lists), some involving as much as 30 mins. to an hour of my time in order to provide that person with valuable information, there are times when I neglect to scroll down and delete the previous thread. In fact, I make it a particular *point* to include the message to which I am replying as the point of reference. If, after donating my time and efforts to help others, I neglect to "summarize" the previous message as you suggest, I sincerely hope I may be forgiven this transgression, now and in the future. I have, however, trimmed off your message and not included it in this reply. Regards, Julie Preston [email protected]

It takes up soooo much space unnecessarily, especially when some of the letters already are trailing clouds of letters themselves. No list could have better help than Gareth and Julie, but you are two of the culprits. Not all of us can add 30-40 letters to our mailing lists daily by using the L option from our Rootsweb sources.
