Hi all, Can anyone tell me if there is an online address to look up WW1 veterans? Thought it might be worth a look for my Hughes line. After all, how many Thomas Hughes would there be!!! Sue Australia
There was a series of books "The National Roll of the Great War 1914-1918" but this is the only volume that I know of an online copy (Manchester). http://www.spinningtheweb.org.uk/bookbrowse.php?page=1&book=940.467+N1&size= 297x400 I believe the medal roll for WWI is now online and you can get details of the medals issued to someone but I don't think it gives much information. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/military/ Martin Briscoe Fort William M&LFHS | Gwynedd FHS > -----Original Message----- > From: sue adam [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: 22 August 2004 06:26 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [CAE] WW1 records > > Hi all, > Can anyone tell me if there is an online address to look up > WW1 veterans? Apart from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which Lorna mentioned, there is a fairly new site from the National Archive, which is not yet complete: The Medals Rolls Index: http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk/medals.asp This was created by the Army Medal Office (AMO) towards the end of the First World War. "The index was created to enable the AMO to place on one card, all of the details about an individual's medal entitlement, their rank or ranks, the unit or units they served in, the first operational theatre they served in and most importantly, the original AMO medal roll references. These medal rolls (held in WO 329) show the entitlement to the medals and also provide all of the accounting references for the issuing of the medal or medals." As almost all those who saw service overseas were awarded a campaign medal, this is a good source to find out some details about those who survived the War the War Graves Commission only details those who died. The only draw back is that you have to pay to see the actual record, only the index is free.
