    1. List census - ROWLANDS/JONES/HUMPHREYS

    3. Lizzie from Brisbane, Australia researching ROWLANDS and JONES(Llanrug/Llandeiniolen area). ----------- I'm Jane Ellen ROWLANDS, Lizzie's gtgrandmother, and I was born about 1865 in Bangor. My parents were Owen Robert ROWLANDS/ROBERTS (b 1834 at Llanrug), a joiner, and Margaret HUGHES (b 1834 Penmon - see AGY List mail). They married at the Calvanist Tabernacle Chapel, Bangor in 1862 where I was an organist for many years. Dad was listed in the 1851 Llanddeiniolen census as Owen ROBERTS but from then on as Owen ROWLANDS and in 1887 he was listed as a Temperance Hotel keeper in Bangor. I was the only girl in the family and we were all born in Bangor: Eldest brother, Robert Evans ROWLANDS (b 1864) became a Church of England Clergyman and was at The Rectory, St Georges, Llandaff in 1901. Then Hugh ROWLANDS (b 1868) who became a confectioner at one stage, but was a draper in Carnarvon St, Bangor in 1901. He married Mary (b 1872) from Llangristiolus. I believe I had another brother, John Idris (b 1870) who became a Methodist Minister and was in Llancil in 1901. Haven't been able to confirm him yet. Owen Robert ROWLANDS (Jr) arrived in 1873. He was a confectioner/baker in Bangor in 1901. He married Annie. And finally, William (Willie) ROWLANDS arrived in 1875. He went to live across the Menai Straits in Beaumaris where he worked as a confectioner in 1901. There was talk that either John Idris or Owen Robert ran the Temperance Hotel in Bangor at some time, but this is unconfirmed. My uncles (dad's side) were: William ROWLANDS b 1838 at Llanrug. He was a slate quarryman, married Ann (b 1839) from Llanllechid and they appear in 1881 living in Pant y Buarth, Llanddeiniolen with their children John (12), Mary (10) and Henry (7). I think Ann may have died and William remarried Ellen (b 1847 Llandeiniolen) as William (63), Ellen (54) and Henry (27, another quarryman) appear at the same address in 1901. Rowland Evans ROWLAND was born in 1843 and in 1861 he was a joiner's apprentice in Tan y Buarth. He married Mary (b 1850 Llanberis) and their daughter, Sarah K was born there about 1875). Rowland and his family then moved to Venmore St, Everton, Lancs and were living there in 1881. Paternal grandfather, Robert ROWLANDS was born about 1809 in Llanddeiniolen and worked as a slate quarryman, living in Pant y Buarth in 1851. I think he married Catherine (JONES/ EVANS**) (b abt 1817 Llanrug) in 1833 in Llanrug. Catherine is listed as JONES in the LDS marriage record. Robert probably died (maybe a quarry accident?) before 1861 as Catherine appears as a widow living in Pant y Buarth in the 1861 census. But then comes a mystery - who did my grandmother Catherine remarry and when?? She pops up in the 1871 Bangor census as "mother in law" so was probably visiting us, (my dad, Owen Robert ROWLANDS wasn't at home in 1871), but her surname is now WILLIAMS and she is described as married (the census taker must have been either dead tired or dyslexic because he wrote her age back to front - she was 54 not 45!). Can anyone tell me who my step-grandfather was? **Because one of my uncle's was listed in the 1851 Llanddeiniolen census as Rowland EVANS (not ROWLANDS) its been suggested he was named after grandmother Catherine's family, and patrynomics being what they are ..........! As for me, I met and married John HUMPHREYS in 1887 and we had 7 children whilst we lived in Holyhead Road, Upper Bangor and ran a very successful grocery business. Our children were: Arthur Lewis HUMPHREYS (1887-abt 1967). Sadly Arthur disappeared one day whilst he was out and was never seen again, nor his body found. Richard Emyr HUMPHREYS (b 1888), Lizzie's grandfather. He went on to take over the family grocery business in Upper Bangor. He was a wonderful pianist and often used to play the organ for Bangor Cathedral. He and his wife, Gladys (nee BIRT) are buried at Llanfaes, Agy. Our only daughter, Gladys HUMPHREYS was born in 1891 but sadly only lived a few months. Gwyilym Roland HUMPHREYS was born in 1892 and became a bank manager in Wrexham. He married Morfydd and they had a daughter Davida. John Llewellyn HUMPHREYS (1893-1901), another one who died young. Gwynne Ivor HUMPHREYS (1896-1967) was also a grocer and helped in his father's business. He was a Lieutenant in the Welsh Fusiliers in 1914. Robert Hywel (Howie) HUMPHREYS (1897). He ran the Temperance Hotel in Liverpool for a while, but when business failed set up a chicken farm in Somerset. He married Lily VIVIAN. So if anyone can help gtgrand daughter Lizzie solve some of these mysteries or add to her knowledge, please let her know. ------------ Lizzie Brisbane, Australia FHS: Mont #965, Gwynedd #2991 outgoing mail scanned by PC-cillin 2004
