Hi to the lists(s), In response to Alwyn's request........ I am Peter WILLIAMS, living in Lower Hutt, near Wellington, capital city of NZ (AKA Middle Earth!). My connection to Caernarfon is my very large brickwall. My ggfather was Walter WILLIAMS. Walter first surfaces in NZ when he married Susan FISHER in Timaru in January 1873. At that time, Walter stated in the Intention to Marry that he had been living in Timaru for 18 months (note - not necessarily the length of time he had been in NZ). NZ marriage records at that time did not record any parent details for the marriage parties. Walter and Susan had 10 children - for 9 of them, the parent's birth place were recorded as part of the birth registration. The majority show either Caernarfon or just North Wales! One however shows a birthplace, but I can't decipher it. Walter signed the record with his mark so it's probably only the registrar's guess at what he was saying. To further complicate matters, Walter's age is progressively older with each registration!. The range of ages given show he was born between 1840 and 1846. I have found a list of members of the Forester's Lodge in Timaru which states Walter's birth date as 20 April 1846 (list is dated 1886). The GRO Index doesn't show any likely entry, but I realise that these years are in the early stages of civil registration so it probably wasn't recorded. Walter died in 1914. but no parents details are recorded on his death entry. Currently he's on my backburner as I really need to find something here in NZ to direct me to where he was born in Wales.
