Hallo Ian I too have Aberdaron & Bardsey connections. I have researched my gt grandfather (Richard Griffiths, Born 1820 at Bryn Mawr, Aberdaron) & his ancestors quite successfully back to the 1700s. He had a younger brother, Rees (born 1826) who married Ann Williams dau of Rev Robert Williams & Jane, of Bardsey. Their children, Ruth (b 1863/4), William ( 1865/6) & Jane (1869/70) were born there & I believe Rees was buried on Bardsey too. I am in contact with a descendant of this family who I won't name without her permission of course. I am also in contact with a descendant of Richard's eldest son, (my grandmother's eldest brother) Griffith Griffiths, (born 1853)who became a medical missionary in India, and with a descendant by marriage of her elder sister Ruth, (b 1862) who married a mariner, Capt Wm Evans. Ann Williams of Bardsey had an elder sister who married ...EVANS, they had a son, Robert who I found on a census living with Rees & Ann at one point. Both Richard & Rees were mariners, as was Richard's 2nd son, Robert. I have quite a bit of information on their voyages. My grandmother was Richard's youngest daughter Mary Griffiths born 1865 in Llanfaglan. Her mother died in 1870 & he remarried in 1873 to Ann DAVIES of Nevin. This is probably sufficient information for now - I don't know how much you or list members can digest! Am happy to provide more. When we visited the Lleyn peninsula in May 2003 we found a descendant living at Bryn Mawr but she was very elderly and has not maintained contact. The tenancy of house/farm had been passed to Richard's sister in law Ann who married a farmer, Thomas Jones. One of his sons later bought it & it passed down the family. Hi Diane Excellent - a bit more for the chart (it's a bit more than a 'tree' !). I'm interested in your comments re "Ann Williams of Bardsey had an elder sister who married ...EVANS, they had a son, Robert who I found on a census living with Rees & Ann at one point." I have Ann's two older sisters as - Eleanor (b1818) married Evan John Williams Jan/Mar 1842 - The 1851 census has them living at Cristin (on Enlli). They lived their until their deaths - Evan in 1875 & Eleanor in 1903 - they are both buried on Enlli. Evan was born on Enlli but I have not established which family as he does not appear on the island in the 1841 census. Jane (b1825) married Morris Williams (of Nant on Enlli - the other half of the 'semi-detached house that Rees Griffiths & family lived in!). She lived in Nant until her death in 1901 and she is buried on Enlli. Can't find where Morris is buried. Neither of the above have a son Robert directly referred to as such. "Robert Evans" - The 1851 census shows him as "living at Hendy on Enlli, aged 7, scholar, grandson of Rev Robert Williams" (also living at Hendy). The 1861 census shows him as "living at Hendy, a17, labourer, grandson of Robt Williams (also at Hendy). There is a slight change in the 1871 census as he is then show aged 27 but he is called 'Robert Williams' described as 'servant' under "relationship to head of household" ie Robert Williams. The 1881 census shows him as "aged 37 ag lab - nephew of Rees Griffiths" - both still living at Hendy. The 1891 census shows him aged 47, still at Hendy and unmarried called 'Robert Evans' again. This time however he is described as the cousin of Rees Griffiths. Without ordering his a copy birth entry/certificate - we may never know. I suspect that he is the eldest child of Evan John Williams and Eleanor Williams and that he was named using the patronymic system - the system survived on Enlli well into the 1800's. 'Surnames' as we know them changed from census to census on Enlli - and back again! Even now in the Aberdaron area they do not mean much - folk are known by their first name plus their housename! I have photos of the gravestone of Rees & Ann Griffiths on Bardsey/Enlli - if you would like a copy sent direct. The 'formal' graveyard on Enlli has 10 graves with memorial stones and another 15 marked by a long narrow mound with a small stone at either end. There are of course many other graves for the hundreds if not thousands that went there to be buried. ( I'm not attempting to list them! :-(( ) One early grave recently had become exposed in the middle of the main track along the island (near the graveyard) and had to be covered over. The booklets of memorial inscriptions produced by the Gwynedd Family History Society are very useful - if List members are not aware of them- see their website! http://www.gwynedd.fsbusiness.co.uk/ I've found odd transcription errors - only to be expected with such a task - but they have added a huge deal of information to my Enlli 'chart'. Trusting the above is of some use Ian Jolly ----- Original Message ----- From: "Diana Wilkinson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 09, 2004 11:49 AM Subject: Re: [CAE] List Census - Bardsey Island & Aberdaron area Hallo Ian I too have Aberdaron & Bardsey connections.
