I realised that in my haste to send off my research interests, I forgot to tell you who I am, where I am and what I am most looking for. So here goes my attempt to remedy that. I am Megan Roberts, and live mainly in London, and sometimes in Lancashire. My father and one of my brothers live on Anglesey. I started looking at the familys history, when my father had to clear his parents home and we found various documents. Before then I knew very little, except that his fathers parents had died when he was small and that he had been brought up by his grandmother. So I found 1. My Taids birth certificate William Henry Roberts 18 April 1899, Brynderwen, Talysarn. Father John Evan Roberts, mother Elizabeth Catherine Roberts formerly Evans. This was a certificate issued in December 1911 for the Factory and Workshop Act 1901. This was the first time we knew his parents names. 2. An "In Memorium Card" for Evan Roberts who died aged 58 3 October 1899 at 3 Baptist Street, Penygroes. The card mentions his wife Jane, who my father knew to be his great grandmother. So now we knew his great grandfathers name. We knew my Taid had a older brother, Thomas Llewellyn (Jimmy tailor), who was about 10 years older, so we looked at the 1891 Census, and found both John Evans family and Evans family. This gave John Evans age as 24, and his place of birth as Llanbeblig, and Elizabeths age as 22 and her place of birth as Llanllyfni. Evan was said to be 53 and born in Caernarfon, and Jane 49 born in Llanllyfni (the 1881 and 1901 censuses say Clynnog). Living with Evan were his children Griffith aged 17 and Maggie aged 15 and his nephew William Roberts aged 6. In 1901 Jane describes William as her son aged 16. I then worked back looking for birth, marriage and death certificates. I have only found 1 birth and 1 marriage certificate which seem to fit Evan. Unfortunately they have contradictory information, so I am stuck. Birth Evan 7 March 1842 New Street Caernarfon. Father Robert Roberts, quarryman. Mother Mary Roberts formerly Evans. Marriage 8 August 1865, Llanbeblig Church Evan Roberts 24, shoemaker, living in North Penrallt, Caernarfon. Father Llewellyn Roberts, weaver. Wife Jane Griffith 21, no occupation. Father John Griffith shoemaker. Also living in North Penrallt. Evan did not sign the certificate, but made his mark. Jane did sign the certificate. I know that Evan was a cobbler, and that Jane, at least in later life was known as "Jane Crydd", (Jane Cobbler). It does not seem likely that Robert and Llewellyn could be the same person given the differences in occupation. There is another complication in all this and that is the question of Janes literacy or otherwise. She apparently signed her marriage certificate, but she made her mark on her son John Evans birth certificate, and her will, which was written in 1918. So to cut a long story short any suggestions, ideas or other thoughts would be most gratefully received, because I cant go further back until I know who Evans parents were.
