Hello, My husband and I will be vacationing in Britain in September and plan to spend a couple days visiting old family homes, archives, etc. Most of our family came from Anglesey, so I am fairly new to research in Caernarfonshire. I was hoping that someone could verify for me whether or not the Caernarfon Record Office is the place we need to visit. Our family primarily came from Dolwyddelan, with some branches in Llanrwst (I'd be looking at records prior to 1850). Are there any other repositories that I should visit? Thanks for the help, Michelle Price Missouri, USA __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! The difficulty with the Conwy Valley area, that includes Dolwyddelan and Llanrwst, is that it is the borderland between two historic counties. Dolwyddelan is in Caernarfonshire and Llanrwst is mainly in Denbighshire. Dolwyddelan records are likely to be in the Caernarfon Records Office but Llanrwst records are likely to be in the Rhuthin Records Office about 50 miles distant. If you are mainly interested in parish registers and census returns an alternative would be to use Conwy Library Archive Access Service, where you can find microfiche PRs & census returns for Dolwyddelan (and other Conwy Valley Caernarfonshire parishes) in Llandudno library and for Llanrwst (and other Denbighshire CV parishes) three miles down the road in Colwyn Bay Library. Bishop's Transcripts (copies of parish registers), census returns, wills, tithe returns and many other documents for the whole of Wales can be found in the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. If you are short of research time the National Library might be the best port of call, rather than a local repository. Who are you planning to research on your visit? List members may be able to help with some of the queries and enable you to spare some research time whilst you are here.
