As promised, here are the Census details to supplement Arlene's helpful replies. 1841 Bangor: High Street [lower end of High St., near Mount Street] Robert Jonathan, Painter, 30, [Born Bangor] Anne do. 28, " " Elizabeth [Bridgen?], 27, [not born in Bangor] 1851 Bangor: High Street Robert Jonathan, Head, 41, Artist/Painter, b. Llanbeblig Ann " Wife, 40, b. Llandegai This is taken from the GFHS Index so should be checked for accuracy. With the actual Census you can work out where in High Street they lived. John Steegman's 'Portraits in Welsh Houses', Vol.1, North Wales (1957) list over 2000 portraits, but unfortunately none are by Robert Jonathan. Good luck with your research, David -----Original Message----- From: David Price [mailto:davidprice21@tiscali.co.uk] Sent: 29 April 2006 19:55 To: WLS-CAERNARFONSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: Portrait Painter in bangor Angharad I have an interest in Bangor artists, but although I had seen his name in trade directories, I know nothing of his work. I researched in some detail the life and work of landscape artist Joseph Josiah Dodd, who like Jonathan, lived (briefly c.1860)at Eldon Terrace(near the top of Glanrafon Hill). I see in the GFHS Marriage Index that Robert Jonathan married by licence Anne Roberts at Bangor Cathedral 19 April 1834 (both single otp). I can't see anything about him in Peter Lord's splendid books on Welsh art. At NLW Aberystwyth there is a large card index of Welsh portraits which may give you some information. I'll try to send details of 1841 & 51 tomorrow. I am searching for the address of Robert Jonathan, Portrait Painter in Bangor. According to Slaters he was in Bangor between 1835 and 1856. He painted two exceptionally fine half portraits of my Great Great Great Grandparents in 1846, and I am interested in finsng out as much about him as I can. Many thanks for your help Angharad ______________________________
