    1. RE: Llanengan tide waiters

    3. Sorry, the Newborough Estate records are in Caernarfon not Bangor. I am just starting to get into the area of tide waiters, customs and coastguards but I think that they were all one and the same in the early 19th century. Might be wrong, tho. The term "tide waiter" or "coast waiter", I assume, means that the incumbent had to see at high tide whether any ships were coming to shore. John and William Griffiths were farmers of Llamerin, Llanengan and also paid a not-insignificant salary out of the income of Tanrallt farm, Llanengan, for their additional work. They were described as working from Penrhyndu - literally black (or treacherous) prominatory. This is the small peninsula marked on the OS map sticking out from Bwlch Tocyn in Llanengan at the south end of the beach in Abersoch. I don't know - but am in the process of finding out - whether there was a small station of some sort for the winter months or bad weather. I assume that there would have been some sort of look-out point? Yrs, Ian London SW9 _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
