Good Morning Gwyn; I did a search of 1881National Index CDs. There were no Wamken/in/an, or Hamken/in/an or Mamken/in/an or Tamken/in/an in England or Wales in 1881; There were of course a few John Tomkins/Tonkin (no Jack) in Wales as well as England. Living in Liverpool, working as a servant. Your man may have been in Ireland, my ancestors imported horses in from Ireland in the years you are looking at.
