    3. Hi, Apologies for the delay in updating the site, but I have had a couple of weeks off to recharge the batteries, plus I have been contributing the odd item for a new bottle collecting website/forum that's recently come online. For anyone with an interest in old bottles the link is at the end of this message, although you do have to register to participate. Anyway, the Carnarvon Alehouse Recognizances for 1798, 1799, & 1800 have been completed and can be seen in the Miscellaneous Section at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wlsccaer/ Regards, Keith. 1. Jones and Williams and Owens- list census
    2. Doris Smith
    3. 1. My name is Doris A. Smith, and I live very near Houston, Texas, US. I'm searching for two JONES families and two WILLIAMS families and an OWEN family. Here is what I already know: 2. JONES and OWEN Hugh O. JONES - in 1871 Wales Census he was 24 years of age. His birthplace is listed at Llanfaelog, Anglesey, Wales. He is listed as the Head of the household and is a widower, and his occupation is listed as a laborer. I know that he came to the US in 1884 and landed in NY. I don't know how long he stayed there, but he moved to Chicago, ILL. He filled out his papers for naturalization 11 October 1884 at the Superior Cout of Cook Co., IL.. I do not know when he was actually naturalized Ann (Owens) JONES - in 1871 Census she was 3 years old. Her birthplace is given as Llanberis, Caernarvonshire, Wales, and she is listed as the daughter of Hugh O. JONES. She and her father, Hugh O. JONES came to America in 1884, landing in NY. I don't know how long she and her father stayed in NY, but they wind up in Chicago, ILL.. Ann and John H (below) were my great grandparents. My mother remembered Ann saying that the house they lived in in Wales was made of rock, and there was a lot of brass to be polished. There was a maid named Hannah whose job it was to polish the brass. Ann said that the house had been in the family for over 200 years (this was told in the 1940s). She said a lot of her family went to Australia, but didn't mention any family other than herself and her father coming to to US. John H(ugh) JONES and his brother Evan JONES came to the US in 1880 or 1881. They landed in NY and evidently remained there for a few years before moving to Chicago, ILL According to his Bible, John H. JONES was born 17 August 1860 in Llansanan, Denbighshire, Wales (although his tombstone gives his birth year as 1861). I do not know when Evan was born, nor do I know anything at all about him other than he worked with John. John H. JONES and Annie (as she was called then) JONES married in Chicago, IL 5 February 1887, and then moved to Omaha, NE. In Omaha, John and his brother Evan worked as contractors and had their own business, Omaha Slate and Roofing Co., Jones Bros. & Humphry, located at 604 Paxton Building, Omaha. John H. and Annie O. Jones were naturalized in 1887. According to Ann JONES' death certificate, (she died 15 June 1953), her mother's maiden name was Grace WILLIAMS. I know nothing else about her. Now, back to the 1871 Census of Wales. The members of the household were the above named Hugh JONES, head; Ann JONES, daughter; Mary OWENS, mother-in-law; Mary OWENS, daughter of (looks like "d") although I imagine it refers to the mother-in-law. THIS is perplexing to me - as the death certificate of Ann JONES says her mother's maiden name was WILLIAMS.. The person who provided information for the death certificate was the oldest daughter of John H. and Ann JONES, Catherine. This would certainly explain Ann's middle name of OWENS. Grace WILLIAMS remains a mystery to me. The 1871 Wales Census shows Mary OWENS as aged 48 and her birthplace as Llanddyfnan, Anglesey, Wales, and the other Mary OWENS aged 13, born in Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales. The entire household was living in the town of Coed y Ddal in the Civil Parish of Llanberis and the Registration District in the County of Caernarvonshire, at the time the 1871 Census was taken. The Census also shows that the Sub-registraton district was Llanrug, the ED, Institution or vessel of 11. The Census Page was 17 and the Folio was 81. The Household schedule number was 92. The address is Pen Y Graig, but I cannot decipher the number, as it looks to me like "h". WILLIAMS The first WILLIAMS I'd like to know about is the one mentioned above. My knowdedge of the other WILLIAMS family is as follows: Timothy WILLIAMS was born 5 February 1721 somewhere in Wales. I've seen Ruthin and Llangower or Llangow given as his origin before coming to US around 1740. This is basically all I know of him, and since he was the first of our WILLIAMS to come to America, I truly want to know more about him. 3. What I would like most about the families above is who their parents were, where they lived, what they did for a living, and anything that might give me a clue for further research. Thank you, Doris A. 3. I'm working on 6 or 7 branches of the following family, and will send a few at a time to this list and the Caernarvon list. Apologies to those of you who are on both lists! HOLLAND/PREES/PRYCE/OWEN LINES 1754 William HOLLAND and Margaret PREES, married in Llandudno on 20 November. 1757 Jane HOLLAND d/o William and Margaret baptized in Llandudno May 11 1761 Mary HOLLAND, c/o William and Margaret baptized in Llan Rhos Feb. 22 1763 John HOLLAND , s/o William and Margaret baptized in Llan Rhos Mar 20 1769 Maria HOLLAND, d/o William and Margaret baptized in Llan Rhos June 10 1769 Mariana WILLIAM, d/o William and Margaret shown in IGI as baptized June 18 (I think this is the old patronymic naming pattern, since Mary and John above are shown in the IGI as Mary WILLIAM and John WILLIAM, with parents as William and Margaret Holland. The dates for them are exactly the same as shown under the names of HOLLAND in the Llan Rhos Parish Register. So, I believe that Mariana WILLIAM is really Maria HOLLAND and is also the Marianna HOLLAND who was buried April 10, 1785 in Llandudno. If so, she was 16 when she died. 1780 Margaret PRYCE, of Pant-y-Ffynnon, buried 27 September, Llandudno 1782 William Holland buried August 28, Llandudno 1785 Marianna Holland buried April 10, Llandudno (I THINK THIS IS MARIA, above) 1785 Mary HOLLAND married Robert OWEN of Llan Rhos in Llandudno December 10 A possible baptism for Robert Owen is in Eglwys Rhos - July 6, 1758 to Owen Williams and Gaynor. Age would be right. Patronymics again, possibly. 1819 Mary HOLLAND, alias Mary OWEN was buried April 12,1819,in Llandudno, age 56 1824 Robert OWEN buried Feb. 25 age 69, Llandudno Children of Robert and Mary Owen: 1786 Catherine- no information 1788 Margaret (Margaret OWEN married William WILLIAMS March 20, 1813. They had 2 children baptized at the family home, Pant-y-Ffynnon: 1813 Robert, 1815 Jane. Others born later somewhere else. There is a separate email for this line. 1790 William - no information 1792 Edward (Edward OWEN married Mary WILLIAMS Apr. 30,1813 in Llandrillo yn Rhos (we think), and their son, Robert OWENS was bapt. May 17,1818 at Pant-y-Ffynnon. Edward is shown as Labourer. There is a separate email for this line with other siblings of Robert. 1794 Jane - No information. 1797 Mariana (my gggrandmother) Mariana OWEN and William ROBERTS (as of now of unprovable origin) had an illegitimate son in 1819 - William ROBERTS b/s/o Mariana Owen and William Roberts bapt. Feb. 5 . Llanrhos. William and Mariana are shown as servants at Gloddaeth. l don’t know if this child went by the name of Owen or Roberts. 1820 Mariana OWEN and William ROBERTS married Dec. 9, 1820. Separate email for this line. Dottie Lutz, Philadelphia, PA USA

I doubt that it needs Acrobat 6 as it comes with a loadable Acrobat Reader - File name 'Acrobat95' and the file was created in 1999 - well before Acrobat Version 6..... was around! 3. To answer Ian Thompson of London, I am a member of both GFHS and CFHS ... and subscribe to numerous of the ROOTSWEB sites. And, I read every post that arrives, searching for that single THOMAS that might be related 300 years hence. To date, I have seen only one Welsh THOMAS post on any of these sites. [There must be a lot of "doubting" going on in Wales! pardon the pun] I happen also to be the THOMAS list administrator on ROOTSWEB; a rabid genealogist & family historial for over 30 years; and my paternal great grandmother's maiden name was MARTHA JANE THOMPSON. 3. A good point, Ian. My interests are mainly local history, and I often find I need info about musicians or clergy who were born in (or moved to)places outside Gwynedd. Posting queries on other lists can be very productive, and it's a simple matter to unsubscribe when you've finished. 2. Maureen Miles
    3. Hi All My name is Maureen Miles and I live in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. I am researching the Hughes family from Pwllheli, mainly Guy Hughes, a photographer. He took many photographs during 1909 and onward and, I believe, covered events of local interest, such as May Queen Festivals, weddings, quarry openings etc, as well as doing personal portraits. When he died in 1972 all the negatives of his work were put in the Caernarvon County Archives. At the same time, three work books with names and account details were also deposited. The work books have been catalogued, but the negatives have not. The Chief Librarian at the time of the deposit was, apparently, very interested and indicated that they would eventually be digitised and reprinted. Unfortunately, that has not happened and my father, Nevil Hughes in London, is very anxious that they do not go to waste as he feels that they may be of great interest to many people who are researching their family history. I have copies of a couple of pages from the work books and they include such information as: June 13 1909 Mr Young, Lufton, Pwllheli 1. Gp of Golf Committee 2. " " skating carnival June 16 1909 Dr Shelton Jones, Lleyn St 2 carnival gps Feb 11 1909 Mr Galloway, 33 Major St, Manchester 1 1/1 pl of Mr Lloyd George at Links Nov 1922 Mrs Hughes, 5 Tal-y-bont, Chwilag Framed enlgmt of Hugh Hughes 3 8 1932 Superintendant Owen, Police Station 21 1/1 group of police I would be interested to hear from anybody who may have an interest in the subjects. I shall be visting the UK during September and hope to be able to get access to the negatives to assess what condition the are in and to investigate the possibility of getting at least some of them digitised and made available to list members. Regards Maureen Miles

    1. Walter WILLIAMS
    2. Peter Williams
    3. Hi to the lists(s), In response to Alwyn's request........ I am Peter WILLIAMS, living in Lower Hutt, near Wellington, capital city of NZ (AKA Middle Earth!). My connection to Caernarfon is my very large brickwall. My ggfather was Walter WILLIAMS. Walter first surfaces in NZ when he married Susan FISHER in Timaru in January 1873. At that time, Walter stated in the Intention to Marry that he had been living in Timaru for 18 months (note - not necessarily the length of time he had been in NZ). NZ marriage records at that time did not record any parent details for the marriage parties. Walter and Susan had 10 children - for 9 of them, the parent's birth place were recorded as part of the birth registration. The majority show either Caernarfon or just North Wales! One however shows a birthplace, but I can't decipher it. Walter signed the record with his mark so it's probably only the registrar's guess at what he was saying. To further complicate matters, Walter's age is progressively older with each registration!. The range of ages given show he was born between 1840 and 1846. I have found a list of members of the Forester's Lodge in Timaru which states Walter's birth date as 20 April 1846 (list is dated 1886). The GRO Index doesn't show any likely entry, but I realise that these years are in the early stages of civil registration so it probably wasn't recorded. Walter died in 1914. but no parents details are recorded on his death entry. Currently he's on my backburner as I really need to find something here in NZ to direct me to where he was born in Wales. Best regards to all, PeterW
