Apart from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which Lorna mentioned, there is a fairly new site from the National Archive, which is not yet complete: The Medals Rolls Index: http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk/medals.asp This was created by the Army Medal Office (AMO) towards the end of the First World War. "The index was created to enable the AMO to place on one card, all of the details about an individual's medal entitlement, their rank or ranks, the unit or units they served in, the first operational theatre they served in and most importantly, the original AMO medal roll references. These medal rolls (held in WO 329) show the entitlement to the medals and also provide all of the accounting references for the issuing of the medal or medals." As almost all those who saw service overseas were awarded a campaign medal, this is a good source to find out some details about those who survived the War the War Graves Commission only details those who died. The only draw back is that you have to pay to see the actual record, only the index is free. Hi all, Can anyone tell me if there is an online address to look up WW1 veterans? Thought it might be worth a look for my Hughes line. After all, how many Thomas Hughes would there be!!! Sue Australia
Hi Listers The evidence I have comes from the back of a photograph; Ellis David JONES, Penrhyn, Caernarvon. *On his NSW Australia marriage certificate 1881 his parents names were stated as being David JONES, Contractor, and Eleanor ELLIS. *He was a slateworker age 41 in 1881. *In 1882 he stated on his daughter's birth certificate that he was 'about 40'. Can anyone help me find evidence of the birth of Ellis David JONES and/or the marriage of David JONES and Eleanor ELLIS? Also where is Penrhyn located? Thank you Lorna Sydney NSW
There was a series of books "The National Roll of the Great War 1914-1918" but this is the only volume that I know of an online copy (Manchester). http://www.spinningtheweb.org.uk/bookbrowse.php?page=1&book=940.467+N1&size= 297x400 I believe the medal roll for WWI is now online and you can get details of the medals issued to someone but I don't think it gives much information. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/military/ Martin Briscoe Fort William M&LFHS | Gwynedd FHS > -----Original Message----- > From: sue adam [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: 22 August 2004 06:26 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [CAE] WW1 records > > Hi all, > Can anyone tell me if there is an online address to look up > WW1 veterans? Hi all, Is the 1901 census available at LDS or local libraries? I am new into getting back into this family history thing after doing nothing for 4 years, so I have a whole lot more to learn. I went to the government page on Thursday and again yesterday and I have never seen £5 disappear so fast!! I did find what I think is "my" Thomas John WILLIAMS at the end of yesterday's session but my money had run out by then and I already had two false ones :( I put all the information I had in the first few times but did not notice the Advanced Search until it was too late when I think I had found him. If possible could somebody please look up: RG13 PIECE 5285 FOLIO 61 PAGE 15 126 Should be above Thomas John living with his father Robert and mother Ellen. If this is not available locally I will have to wait until I have more people to look up as these fivers are disappearing pretty fast and I know this is the minimum charge. Thanks and Regards Barbara in Sydney via Liverpool

I had a similar problem with my Taid, Thomas PARRY. I knew his approximate date of birth but I had no idea where so I could not distinguish from all the other Thomas Parry. I eventually paid a researcher to look up his World War I record and this gave me several crucial items of information including his place (Brynrefail) and date of birth. I wonder if any of you kind people could offer any suggestions with my brick wall??? I have been searching for my grandfather on my fathers side, John Owen Jones for 4 years now & am no further forward now than I was then. I am not a novice & have managed to go back to 1700 on my mothers side & have done all the usual things, like census, Free BMD & parish registers etc. I have found my grandparents' marriage in 1902 in Festiniog, on which it states that John was resident at Cefncoch Isaf as a farm servant, & that his father was John Jones, Slate Quarryman (deceased). From John's age he was born circa 1880. I have managed ok on his wife's side Jane Ellen Owen who was born Dolbenmaen (incidentally Alwyn (saw your post to MER list) this family also connected to Hedd Wyn) I checked back to the 1901 census BUT he was not at Cefncoch isaf then (hoping to find out where he was born) Searched the 1891 & 1881 census but again there are SO MANY John Jones' with fathers also John Jones it's impossible to tell which is the right one. I have no idea when his father died or where to check for his death. Again I have done the usual things baptism registers & burials for local places, I think he came from the Clynnog/Llanllyfni areas, also I think the family were Methodists (John later became a Deacon at Beulah chapel in Caernarfon) & supposedly had a sister named Alice & brother Evan, which again I have been unable to find so don't know if they are older or younger than John. After their marriage in 1902 the went to Grianog Crossing Pant Glas to live, where my father, 1 of 13 children was born. They moved to Caernarfon to live about 1911. Can anyone offer any suggestions as a way forward, & further research??? I know sometimes a different perspective can help. Thanks Glenys --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi I am looking for assistance in tracking down the parents of JOHN DAVIES who married an ELLEN GRIFFITHS (resident at 10 Tudno St). The marriage was at Llandudno on 20/9/1902. John is described as a bricklayer born circa 1876, and resident at the Kings Head Inn Llangystenyn, which I understand is in the vicinity of Llandudno Junction. His father is given as WILLIAM (deceased) Tailor. Any information or advice most welcome Regards Tony Barratt.
-----Original Message----- From: Carolyn [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, 18 August 2004 3:55 p.m. To: [email protected] Subject: LIST CENSUS-WILLIAMS- LLANDUDNO Good morning Listers, As a new member of this list may I post my interest and say what a great idea a 'list census' is! I am Carolyn, married to Glyn Evan Williams, living in Auckland New Zealand. We have traced the Williams family back through London to Llandudno to Glyn's gt grandfather JOHN WILLIAMS born abt 1853. Fathers name from the marriage cert is given as DAVID WILLIAMS - occupation carpenter. But here we are stuck ! We have purchased two birth certs for John Williams both born in 1853 in Llandudno. One to Roger (occupation Joiner) and Jane (nee Jones) Williams. The other to William (occupation Farmer) and Mary (nee Williams!) Williams. We have also tracked John son of Roger thru the census and he is not our man! As there are so many births for John Williams in other years we are loath to order any more certificates and would welcome any help or local knowledge that may be available. We have looked at the films of the 1871 and 1861 census for Llandudno but no sign of a John with father David Williams. These are the known details of 'our' John Williams: JOHN WILLIAMS married HANNAH ISAACS at Marylebone London on the 18 May 1879 - his occupation given as Joiner. HANNAH ISAACS was born 10 Sept. 1854, Ilston. Her parents - HENRY and MARIA ISAACS occ. Master Cordwainer. From the 1881 census JOHN WILLIAMS gave his age as 27, occupation - House Carpenter, living in Marylebone. On the 1891 census he is age 37, occupation - Architect's Clerk, still living in Marylebone. 1901 census - age 48 occupation - Architects Clerk of Works, living in Hampstead. His date of death is unknown. John and Hannah had the following children all born in Marylebone: 1880 John Edgar 1882 Mary Olive 1885 William Henry 1888 PERCY ( EVAN?) Glyn's grandfather married FLORENCE EUNICE BOOME in 1910, London. 1891 Harold Howell 1892 Leonard David 1896 Stewart William 1900 Nellie Hannah We know nothing about the siblings of Percy born 1888, and again would welcome any help or information, both in Llandudno and London. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Carolyn in NZ.
I am called Bill, though I was never William. I live near Cambridge, England, and started my research a few years ago when I retired. I have a number of lines from North and SW Wales. Here are the difficult Jones and Williams families. Henry JONES was a tailor & draper in Bangor, CAE. He was born about 1799 in Llanfairpg in Anglesey and died 1866 in Bangor. Henry's first wife was Ann (possibly the Ann OWEN who married a Henry JONES in Llanfairpg on 30 Nov 1821). She died about 1830. Their eldest son was Cadwaladr JONES (1823-1900), in adult life schoolmaster, parish clerk and Sacrist at the Cathedral. Henry's second wife was Ann(e) WILLIAMS, born about 1813 in Llangaffo or Aberffraw, Anglesey, depending which census you look at. She died in 1891. They married in 1833 at Bangor Cathedral. Ann may well have been the daughter of Edward and Mary, baptised 9 Oct 1814 at Aberffraw, Talar Rodio CM Chapel. Henry & Ann had 7 children at least. I know only the fate of their eldest son John (1838-1883), my ancestor. I am interested in anything anyone knows about the family of the above. Regards Bill G-J
I am a new subscriber to the list ,my name is John Maddocks living in New Zealand .but originally from Liverpool UK,My welsh roots are from my Grandfather John Edward Maddocks born 1873 Denbigh Grace Tope born Bangor1868. Grace,s mother was Jane Ed munds or Edmonds born 1836 +at Bangor or surrounding village ,her parent,s Richard and Alice Griiffith where at Ffrdd Carwfarm near the village of Glasinfryn at the 1851 census. Jane my Great Grandmother was married to a Richard Tope from Totnes Devon in Bangor . There is however some confusion about Jane,s father ie on aBirth Cert he is listed as Richard Edmunds labourer but on the marriage cert for Jane 1863 the father is listed as Edmund Edmund,s Coachman Jane had an elder brotherEdmund , Caernarfon Record office are suggestingthat for some reason Edmund substituted as Jane,s father, the father Richard was still alive ,the marriage was in the Bangor Registry office is this possible ?.One thougt is that there where more thanone Jane Edmund,s born around the 1836 period can any kind person throw any light on this riddle ? as yet I have been unable to check the 1861 census for Bangor There is a JaneEdmund on the1851 census in Bangor who married a Evan Evans in 1858 who could be our Jane . Allen Powell of Criccieth Born Efail Isaf, Pontypridd. To the best of my knowledge I have no relatives in North Wales and therefore no interests as such. However, as I have spent most of my days in Dolwyddeian, Capel Curig or Criccieth I thought I might be able to help with any queries re these places; the last few years have been interesting to say the least ! Thanks for letting me in ! Allen
I realised that in my haste to send off my research interests, I forgot to tell you who I am, where I am and what I am most looking for. So here goes my attempt to remedy that. I am Megan Roberts, and live mainly in London, and sometimes in Lancashire. My father and one of my brothers live on Anglesey. I started looking at the familys history, when my father had to clear his parents home and we found various documents. Before then I knew very little, except that his fathers parents had died when he was small and that he had been brought up by his grandmother. So I found 1. My Taids birth certificate William Henry Roberts 18 April 1899, Brynderwen, Talysarn. Father John Evan Roberts, mother Elizabeth Catherine Roberts formerly Evans. This was a certificate issued in December 1911 for the Factory and Workshop Act 1901. This was the first time we knew his parents names. 2. An "In Memorium Card" for Evan Roberts who died aged 58 3 October 1899 at 3 Baptist Street, Penygroes. The card mentions his wife Jane, who my father knew to be his great grandmother. So now we knew his great grandfathers name. We knew my Taid had a older brother, Thomas Llewellyn (Jimmy tailor), who was about 10 years older, so we looked at the 1891 Census, and found both John Evans family and Evans family. This gave John Evans age as 24, and his place of birth as Llanbeblig, and Elizabeths age as 22 and her place of birth as Llanllyfni. Evan was said to be 53 and born in Caernarfon, and Jane 49 born in Llanllyfni (the 1881 and 1901 censuses say Clynnog). Living with Evan were his children Griffith aged 17 and Maggie aged 15 and his nephew William Roberts aged 6. In 1901 Jane describes William as her son aged 16. I then worked back looking for birth, marriage and death certificates. I have only found 1 birth and 1 marriage certificate which seem to fit Evan. Unfortunately they have contradictory information, so I am stuck. Birth Evan 7 March 1842 New Street Caernarfon. Father Robert Roberts, quarryman. Mother Mary Roberts formerly Evans. Marriage 8 August 1865, Llanbeblig Church Evan Roberts 24, shoemaker, living in North Penrallt, Caernarfon. Father Llewellyn Roberts, weaver. Wife Jane Griffith 21, no occupation. Father John Griffith shoemaker. Also living in North Penrallt. Evan did not sign the certificate, but made his mark. Jane did sign the certificate. I know that Evan was a cobbler, and that Jane, at least in later life was known as "Jane Crydd", (Jane Cobbler). It does not seem likely that Robert and Llewellyn could be the same person given the differences in occupation. There is another complication in all this and that is the question of Janes literacy or otherwise. She apparently signed her marriage certificate, but she made her mark on her son John Evans birth certificate, and her will, which was written in 1918. So to cut a long story short any suggestions, ideas or other thoughts would be most gratefully received, because I cant go further back until I know who Evans parents were. Many thanks Megan --------------------------------- ALL-NEW Yahoo! Messenger - all new features - even more fun!
