    3. I would suspect he worked the Penhryn Slate Quarry in Bethesda. I'm not at home at the moment, visiting with my mother, but will return and have a look at what census I have and see what I have.. The 1851 census for the parishes of Bethesda are on Genuki. Have you had a look at that site? 3. Hi List I'm re-posting a previous interest as I now have updated information. I'm sorry for the repetition. I'm looking for someone who has access to the 1841 or 1851 Census of Wales who can look up the following family for me. David JONES, Eleanor JONES (wife nee ELLIS) and Ellis David JONES (son) c. 1833-1840. Ellis David JONES came to Australia before 1877. Because of the very common name I have been unable to verify exactly when; arrivals in 1854 and 1858 are promising. *On his marriage certificate in 1881 he gave his occupation as slate quarry man, aged about 40 (pity he didn't know how old he was!), birthplace Wales (helpful!). *His grave transcription has him born about 1836/1837 *Another certificate has his birthdate around 1842. *He always stated his birthplace as Wales. *A photograph in my possession is inscribed on the back "Ellis David Jones Penrhyn Caernarvonshire". I guess he was not necessarily born there. I have searched the 1871 census but the family must have disbanded by then as I can only find single Ellis Jones'. If I can find the complete family I'm more likely to find the right one. The Society of Australian Genealogists has microfiche of the 1841 and 1851 census but it is incomplete. I have searched all available fiche for Wales. Am I asking too much? Can anyone advise me where to go next? Thank you Lorna. 2. Hi Alwyn and Jonathan, I have been very involved with things other than family history for most of the year unfortunately, so I haven't been able to do much more than quickly read through the email on this list. However, I have just read Alwyn's reply to Jonathon and I am very interested in the family listed as I also have an Evan Griffiths who was born in Llanrug in 1852 and I also have Griffiths in Saron and Bethel. If Jonathan would like to get in touch with me off list perhaps we can establish whether or not there is any connection between the families. Jan

There is an excellent book, The North Wales Quarrymen. I was able to find a copy on ebay. It tells all about their lives and the strike. All the males on both sides of my family were quarrymen and were involved in the strike. I have a cousin who's grandfather worked during the strike and received a home to live in as a reason to work. A friend of mine, living in Bethesda, is the granddaughter of the man that built those homes for Lord Penhryn. She's elderly, and full of historical knowledge on the village. Did you know pubs were only allowed on one side of the high street as Lord Penhryn owned the buildings on the other side. He did not allow pubs. Hi to all I have a question for more knowledgeable people about the strike. The strike went from 1900 to 1903, but when I was looking at the 1901 census today getting some information about my family - I noticed that all the neighbours (as well as my own family) are all shown as occupation - Slate Quarryman - next column - Worker. Does this mean that they may have worked in one of the other local quarries or would they have been "bradwyr's" (traitors)? I found my g.grandmother Ellen WILLIAMS nee OWENS with her 3 children (Mary Ellen, Jane and Thomas John) living with her parents, she is shown as married (rather than widowed) but no sign of her husband Robert WILLIAMS. I downloaded a few pages of who I thought he could be - but none seem to be the right one. I hope he had gone away to work rather than be a bradwyr, but who knows what any of us would do if faced with starvation. Regards Barbara --------------------------------- ALL-NEW Yahoo! 3. Dear Barbara in Sidney, While is true that Ancestry.com has a great deal of information within its web site, access to the census records cost extra. I pay an annual fee for the US and UK census records above the basic ancestry.com subscription. Hope this helps. If I subscribe to Ancestry.com.uk for either an annual fee, a quarterly fee or a pay-per-view fee does this give me access to UK census records ONLY - no others?? I have been to both the UK page and the American (home) one.........now it seems to be (and I may be wrong here) that the American annual fee gives you access to EVERYTHING.........though of course it is far more expensive :( and they don't have the quarterly or pay per view option either. I have been for a good scout around both pages today, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer.............looking forward as always to your knowledgeable replies. They can at least put you in touch with the sub office responsible for Capel Curig. I have a feeling that this would be the Conwy Area Record Office, but am not certain. 3. Aaron, HMS "Clio" was launched at Sheerness 1858, became a training ship in River Thames, London, 1876, transferred to Menai Straits 1877 and moored at Glyn Garth near Bangor Pier. Sold in 1919, broken up at Bangor 1920. Life was tough for the young lads who were trained on board, and in Llandegfan churchyard, there are graves of 29 Clio boys. Their sad demise is described in an article in the Transactions of the Anglesey Antiquarian Society (1985), by Emrys W. Roberts. At the Library of University of Wales Bangor is the same author's M.Ed. thesis (1979), "The Clio (1877-1920): a study of an industrial training ship in North Wales". The same library holds "Annual Reports" of the Clio for 1908-1919, and there are a few other Reports scattered in various other archives. There are several photos of the ship and crew held at Caernarfon Record Office. Did your William Thomas stay in the area after 1881? 3. Parish registers might give you some further information. You know the church, you now need to go through the parish register, it might give you their parents name and witnesses of the wedding. You have to pay for information from the Hayes Marriage Index, and from the Public Records Office in London, but it might give you some information. You could pay for a search by the PRO. I've done it and found it worth it. Not always the case though. Try searching their site. See if the LDS has micro fiche of the parish register that you could order and view at a nearby Family Center. I'd start here, as it's the cheapest and easiest way to go. They had the info on them so they probably have the parish register available on micro fiche. Hopefully, others can add to this. You can try this website http://www.hotkey.net.au/~jwilliams4/mariner1.htm or send a 'subscribe' message to [email protected] I can't find this mailing list on the Rootsweb mailing list site http://lists.rootsweb.com/ and I have no idea where I found it, but I spent quite a while on the list and it was really useful. With luck you'll come up with someone who knows all about training ships. Look at the Miscellaneous section of the mailing lists they have a wealth of information. 1. Thomas Hughes/Jane Williams
    2. Lee Nordberg
    3. Dear Listers I found on the LDS site that my 3rd great grandfather Thomas Hughes and Jane Williams were married 21 Nov 1815 at the Church of Saint Peblig in Llanbeblig. That is as much info as I have been able to get on them. I don't have either of their parent's names or where they lived. Their children appear to have been born in Capel Curig Hamlet. Their first child was born in 1813 (Margaret), David 1815, Thomas 1817, William 1819, Griffith 1826 (my connection). Is it possible for anyone to point me in the correct direction to get more info on this couple. Thanks and kind regards Lee Cousins Borehamwood Hertfordshire _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself with cool new emoticons http://www.msn.co.uk/specials/myemo

    1. RE Thomas PRICE (Ap Ryce) FAMILY
    2. Ronnie
    3. Greetings all on this list. I am new to this list and hope someone can help or turn me in the right direction: I have the following information and would like to trace this family back now in Wales. Thomas Price b c 1645 in Wales who married Maria Baker in the Channel Islands. Thomas Price was originally thought to be from the area Trelech-a'r-Bettw, a little north of Mt. Snowdon Carnarvon (Caernarvon) in Wales. The only clue to the family from which Thomas Price, Founder of the Guernsey Channel Islands branch sprang, is to be gathered from an antique silver seal which he brought with him when he arrived in Guernsey. Below is information off the seal used by Price in the Channel Islands and the later generations. (as mentioned above). Arms. - Argent, a lion rampant, reguard sable. Crest. - A falcon sable, close. Motto. - "Spero" - "I hope" This information from a published book 'Our Kin Genealogicala Sketches, Pedigrees and Arms of Sundry Families 1890' The seal was engraved with the above Arms, crest and motto, the device of the ancient Welsh family of Ap Rhys, of Caernarvon, Wales, whose pedigree extends back six or seven centuries. (I don't have a clue what this means!!) Thomas Price originally came to the Channel Islands travelling with a tutor/companion, (he was possibly a 'remittance man') who after his marriage, settled permanently in Guernsey. The family had an interest in shipping, they survived the Napoleonic invasion and prospered. Can some kind person please help me trace this family of Price/Pryce (I have only seen the spelling as Price). I have not seen the original seal but Matthew GuĂ©rin PRICE b c1787 (a Private Banker and married to Caroline, Countess Raphael. ) who was the third great grandson of Thomas PRICE b c1645 gave his son Captain Matthew Price b 1818 a similar seal when he came to Australia in 1852. This is still in the family here. Kind regards Ronnie Bates [email protected] Webpage. http://www.southwest.com.au/~ronnie
