Wi Obits Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/WoodObits?read=249 Surname: GRIGNON, JOYAL ------------------------- Mary J GRIGNON Obit taken from the Centralia Enterprise, Volume 5 Number 49, Thursday April 17, 1884, Page 5 Column 4 Surnames: GRIGNON, JOYAL Obituary, Mrs Mary J GRIGNON Died--at the residence of Louis JOYAL, at Point Basse, Town of Port Edwards, in this county, of old age, Mrs Mary J GRIGNON, relict of Amable GRIGNON, in the 88th year of her age. Mrs GRIGNON was the oldest living settler of this county and of the Wisconsin river pinery, having moved from Portage City in 1828, with her husband. They were the first people of mixed blood who settled north of Portage. Their first house was built at a point on the river bank, and is yet known as Grignon's bend, a few miles south of Point Basse. There they opened a farm, where Mr GRIGNON died in the year 1845. The deceased leaves three children who have all raised families of their own, Mr Ignatius GRIGNON, Mr John B GRIGNON and Mrs Louis JOYAL. Mrs GRIGNON died as she had lived, a firm believer and a member of the Roman Catholic Church. The funeral services were held at Grand Rapids, Rev BEYERLE officiating, and her mortal remains buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Grand Rapids last Friday, April 11th.
