Posted on: Wood Co WI Obits Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/WoodObits/458 Surname: ABRAHAMSEN, THOMPSON, ZENIER ------------------------- Hon Lewis THOMPSON printed in the Wood County Reporter, June 18, 1891, Page 1 The funeral service of Hon Lewis THOMPSON, who died at his home in Buxton, Dakota, last Friday, was held at the Lutheran church of Buxton Sabbath afternoon, Rev PHILLIPS of Cummings and Rev OFTENDAHL of Buxton officiating. Services were conducted in both the Scandinavian and English languages. The funeral was probably the largest ever held in Traill County, about one thousand persons being in attendance. The Odd Fellows fraternity, of which the deceased was long an honored member, took part in the services, the lodges of Grand Forks, Hillsboro, Caledonia, Mayville, Northwood and Hatton sending delegations, about one hundred members in all. Mr THOMPSON was born at Hardanger Norway May 30th, 1837, and came to the United States in 1853 and settled first in Beloit, Wisconsin, from whence he moved to Buxton in 1878 where he owned and operated a farm. He has held several public positions in Buxton since his arrival there, has been postmaster for four years, been chairman of the Traill Co Republican Committee, and last fall was elected representative to the State Legislature. Mr THOMPSON was a brother-in-law of A and S J ABRAHAMSEN of this city, and had a large circle of friends and acquaintances throughout the Red River Valley and the entire state. In his death the community and state sustain a profound loss. Mr THOMPSON's death was preced by that of his wife by only about two weeks, so that his family of four children, ages 3 to 8 years old, are left to the care of relatives. It will be remembered that Mr THOMPSON came to Grand Rapids in the year 1868, and was married to Miss Helen ZENIER Nov 6th, 1870. His wife died in March, 1872. One child was born of their union, a boy, who died in his infancy. Mr THOMPSON was initiated into the mysteries of Odd Fellowship in this city in 1874 and remained a member of this lodge until he was permanently located in Buxton, Dakota, when he joined by card, and has ever since been a caring, working member. He was a man of sterling qualities and highly respected by everyone here who enjoyed his acquaintance. NOTE: Apparently portions of the above copied from the Grand Forks Herald. Joan M.
