Are these people "Polish",before Poland was a country, or were they German from a portion called Pomerania? susie
During the last partition period, 1795 to 1918, Poland as nation did not exist. On most records such as census, passenger lists, and naturalization papers, the countries of Prussia (or Germany), Russia and Austria will be seen as the "natural origin" of people who were ethnically Polish. Polonia is a term that refers to Polish communities of the past or present beyond Poland's historic borders, including those here in America.
