    3. >I am trying to find out where is the best source to obtain a marriage >certificate from 1896. I thought the county seat would have it, but the web >page for Wisconsin Vital Records, seems to indicate that they would have it >there. I am confused? If the county of Wood has the copy, how much is it? >I am looking for my great grandparents marriage record. Their names were (on >the record) Idele Clairmont to Thomas LaBrot married 18 June 1896 in Wood >County, Wisconsin. >Can any one help me? >Thank you. > >Pamela Pam, The individual county Register of Deeds offices reply much faster than the state bureau of vital records--that's the main difference. But did you know that the area archives at UW-Stevens Point has pre-1907 vital records on microfilm, and they will charge a $5 handling fee per letter plus .25/page copying fee? Contact them at archives@uwsp.edu You can request up to five items for the $5 handling fee per letter, plus copies at .25/each additional. So, you might want to ask for other vital records, obits found in the Stevens Point Area obituary index at http://library.uwsp.edu/obits/ They will mail the copies and send a bill, so you can get good results for under $10 on pre-1907 Wood, Portage, Marathon, Waupaca and Waushara Co vital records and Stevens Point area obits.
