Freeman Dewitt Lindsay B2/19/1837 in Schroon, Essex Co., NY was son of Major Robert D. Lindsay and Elizabeth Churchill. The source is Freeman's sister Margaret Isabella Lindsay who is author of famous book " LINDSAY"S of AMERICA" published 1889 in Albany, New York by Joel Munsell Publishers. Freeman was a 2nd Lieut. in Civil War serving in Co. E 118th New York Reg. from 8/14/1862 to 6/ 13/1865. for No. Hudson, Essex Co., NY. His Regiment was said to be first to enter Richmond after the surrender of General Robert E. Lee on 12/31/1865. Ms. V. Nelson, Town of Rock, Marshfield, Wisc. Clerk states the Town of Lindsey was named for F.D. Lindsey, a man who was one of the first to carry on the lumber business in that area. He was in Neillsville the Sheriff of the County, Mayor of Neillsville and served in the Wisc. Legislature. " Lindsay's of America" book states Freeman was in the lumber business in Neillsville area with his brother-in-law Jones Tompkins who had married his sister Martha.They had previously been in the lumber business in New York State.
