They were six weeks on the ocean. They came to the United States in 1844, and lived in the State of New York until 1850, when they came west and settled in Portage county, near Amherst, where they lived until 1880, when they moved to Grand Rapids, where they lived a short time and then returned to their old home, where they lived with their youngest son. They had twelve children--four boys and eight girls--ten of whom lived to be men and women, and five survive them, two sons and three daughters. Her husband, Thomas HARKNESS, passed away October 19, 1888, in his 85th year. Mrs. HARKNESS fell and dislocated her hip the 6th of last April, since when she has been confined to her bed until the time of her death, which was September 19, 1889. She was in her 82nd year. The surviving children are: Thomas HARKNESS, Atchison, Kansas; Mrs. W. H. BROWN, Grand Rapids; John HARKNESS, Amherst; Mrs. G. W. PIERCE, Deerfield; Mrs. E. A. TENNANT, Grand Rapids.
