It was one of the earliest Catholic churches established in the Marshfield area, commissioned by the La Crosse Diocese in 1877. Marshfield was incorporated as a city in 1883*. The church currently has about 3700 members. The current church building was built in 1893, and is located at 201 West Blodgett Street. Mass was celebrated in private homes by visiting priests as early as 1874 in the community that would later become Marshfield. Rev. Anthony Schuettelhoefer, formerly a pastor at Medford, became the first resident pastor for St. John's in 1880, and the first church building was completed in 1882. Founders opened the current church building in 1893. Transcriber's Note: According to the Wisconsin Postal History Society's "Wisconsin: It's Territorial and Statehood Post Offices" by Frank Moertl, 1995, the Marshfield post office was established July 16, 1873, with Louis Rivers as postmaster.
